The reconnaissance mission for the 26th MDS has come up with a course worthy of the event's reputation. Anyone who thought it might be hard to devise an itinerary to match the beauty and difficulty of the 25th anniversary MDS will soon see that nothing is impossible after all. We can now announce that the 26th SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES will be a wonderful event in every sense of the word.

The Marathon des Sables was Mark Hines' first excursion into the world of ultra-endurance adventure races. With a background far removed from endurance fitness, this book catalogues his training, preparation and participation in his first great race. Whilst the subsequent titles on the Jungle Marathon and Yukon Arctic Ultra clearly demonstrate his own evolution into an accomplished runner, the Marathon des Sables was where it all began.

In the desert, more than anywhere, access to water is an absolute priority. Helping men and women gain easier, long-term access to water is of crucial importance. To help things move in this direction, MDS has established its carbon footprint and decided to compensate its emissions with a financial contribution to projects on the environment and renewable energy.

The 26th SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES press conference took place on 10 March at the National Moroccan Tourist Office in Paris, marking the media launch of the 2011 event.

A new look for the MDS visuals
For the 25th anniversary, AOI wanted to give the logo a new youthful makeover. This was achieved with the involvement of Emilie Caillaud-Houel, a graphic designer who has been a volunteer on the MDS team for 3 years.
