A phenomenon?
He's quite obviously an exceptional runner but there's nothing
miraculous about his progress; it's the fruit of long hard
work and experience.
We first saw his name on the 7th MDS when he finished 3rd aged
just 20. He then came back 3 times winning 5th place on two
occasions and pulling out once. At that time he was beaten
by renowned and intimidating athletes like Corredor (SP), Derksen
(R), Olmo (I), Costa (F) or Joly (F). During those learning
years, it was the long stage that gave him the most trouble
so he worked hard to remedy the situation. It took him five
attempts to finally clinch victory and when it did happen it
was by beating the best: Corredor, Olmo and Derksen on the

CANCELLATION OF DESERT CUP 2004
Due to
the withdrawal of it major sponsor just a few months before
the race, ATLANTIDE ORGANISATION Internationale has
had to cancel the 2004 edition of the DESERT CUP in Mali
. The next edition is scheduled for December 2005.
Any other races taking place in Mali are independent of our
organisation.

Marathon des Sables go?
Incredibly well. You only had to look at the way the competitors were smiling
from ear to ear. Nobody has criticised anything, or reproached us for anything.
For us, that’s the greatest reward of all. Everything went according to
plan, which is virtually unbelievable. When everything goes so smoothly,
isn’t there the danger that it becomes too predictable, too
much of a routine?
But there is no routine. In the organisation there were lots of changes this
year. 50% of the logistics department were new this year, as well as half ot
the check-point officials. However, there were no problems and it’s precisely
this kind of renewal which stops it from becoming stale. Everybody comes here
each year full of enthusiasm.
As far as the competition goes, you realise if you look at the difference in
timing, that Lahcen Ahansal is unbeatable, but that doesn’t mean that the
race wasn’t exciting to watch...

If you have a problem during the race, you can rely on D 44, Giorgio Simonetti
to give you a helping hand. You can be sure that this remarkable 55 year-old
Italian will do his best to convince you to continue the race. It’s not
all plain sailing for him, however, as a hip operation has left him with a limp

The start of the race is looming large and once again this
year the 600 runners will be representing many different countries.
Amongst them are a few internationally renowned athletes, but
equally many men and women whose main aim is to get over the
finish line. For over a week they will be living together:
showing courage, solidarity, enthusiasm and sharing thousands
