“My name is Maximino Ramon Brito, and I’m 48 years
old. I’m Spanish and I live in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands.
I heard about the marathon four years ago. I saw the pictures of
the runners’ wounded feet and the desert. Since then, I’ve
only been able to think about one thing : getting enough money together
to be able to take part. That was really hard. I tried to get a loan
from the bank, but that didn’t work. I had to take on a second
job. I’m reponsable for the cows on a farm near where I live.
250 of them…I decided to look after a second herd to earn more
money…It meant that I worked long hours, but I made it. Training
sessions were very simple : I just didn’t take my car, and
had to run everywhere. All in all, I’ve run 3000 kilometers
since last June.…Once, my wife asked if I had a mistress, as
she never saw me and I was always tired. I told her I was training
for the Marathon des Sables…
I make my own energy bars by grilling flour and mixing it with walnuts and almonds. “It’s
my first time in Morocco, and it’s amazing. I climbed up a hill yesterday
and just stared at the landscape for an hour. It was magical.”
