Full time wanderer
Lorenzo Cremonesi is a war reporter for Corriere
Della Sera newspaper, not a particularly relaxing job at the best
of times. Now in his
forties, he’s spent the last 20 years or so covering hot
spots such as Jerusalem, Sarajevo and Kabul. For the last 3 years
he’s been posted in Baghdad “a real nightmare” as
he says. So when it comes to taking holiday, rather than choosing
some island in the sun or a week of thalassotherapy, Lorenzo opts
for the Marathon des sables where he can sweat it out on the Moroccans
dunes and sleep in a nomad tent. A surprising choice but then he’s
a far from ordinary person. « In Baghdad, I couldn’t
train properly. So I’d go to the Hotel Palestine and run
up and down the stairs…” We could fill pages with all
the fascinating stories Lorenzo has to tell but have to settle
with sparing a thought for Mrs Cremonesi, who accepts that her
husband spend the year in Baghdad then holidays in Jebel El Otfal… « My
wife is very understanding » remarks the tireless Italian.
