Sandy’s revenge «
I love the marathon, I love the Sahara. I feel connected
to the earth here and its people». Sandy MacCallum from Canada
has an air of serenity when she speaks. The 42 year old has a winning
smile and a frank way of talking – midway between athlete
and philosopher. Yet this experienced athlete, accustomed to ultramarathons,
has had her fair share of troubles during her five editions of
MDS: injuries, gastric problems ... and a lasting impression of
not having pushed her limits to the full. That’s what she’s
aiming for this time round. « I want to finish in the top
fifteen women, to make up for lost time ». But Sandy’s
not stopping there and plans to cross the desert by camel, guided
by Lahcen Ahansal. « I’ve got two projects : one is
to trek from Morocco to Mali, that should take around two months.
Then I plan to go from Morocco to Egypt”. The idea is “to
become stronger” - a real leitmotiv for this slight but surprisingly
determined woman…
