Addicted to running « For
years I was an alcoholic… more than three
bottles a day and smoked two packets of cigarettes. I also took
drugs: amphetamines, speed, cocaine.. even tried heroine a few
times. I was working as an accountant at the time. It was difficult
but I managed to hide my problem. Then in 1998 I took up running.
I was drawn to long distance running. The first one was in December
2000 and I gave everything up in one go : drugs, alcohol, tobacco.
I could feel I’d hit rock bottom. Since then I’m
clean and have taken up marathon running. It’s helped me
to get well. I’ve become addicted to racing.. which is
better… You know, I’ve never had anyone around me
to show me the way. Here all the runners are giving me advice.
They’ve become my new family. »
