Salameh Al Aqrah (164) : there’s revenge to be had
35 year old Salameh Al Aqrah (164) is far from a beginner. A former career-policeman, he’s run 4 Desert Cups, securing 2nd place in the 2000 edition. He also won the world military championships in 2001 and the Dead Sea Ultra-marathon. In 2002 he came to run MDS but was forced to throw in the towel after a disastrous stage where he got lost for more than 3 hours. That traumatic day cost him : he dropped from 3rd to 333rd place but vowed he’d be back to show what he was really capable of. When you ask him about taking revenge he replies humbly : « The Ahansal brothers are children of the desert and I’m from the city. I think they’re unbeatable”. That said, you can be sure he’ll do his best to steal their place at the top.

Frédéric Balard (207), the humanist
He’s back for the second year running with a cause close to his heart : to make people more aware of the rare XP syndrome. There are only 12 or so cases in france including that of young Maximilien. It means he can’t withstand ultra-violet rays. He therefore has to protect himself permanently from all forms of light : a tough challenge as you can imagine. Frédéric says again and again that nothing would make him happier than seeing Maximilien smile. The rest of the time this policeman from Brittany works in the child protection unit and says he’s particularly sensitive to the MDS atomosphere : “you find incredibly solidarity here. Differences of religion, race or colour no longer divide people. In fact there are no frontiers at all.
