Gary Clifton (GB-D 627) and Seb Simmonds
(GB- D766) are taking part in the 22nd Marathon des Sables
- the event that kicks off their year-long fundraising
efforts they are calling the Time & Tide Challenge 630.
The Marathon des Sables is the first 150 competitive miles
of the 630 they are aiming to cover in total. Overall,
they are aiming to raise £50,000 for a charity well-known
to British Marathon des Sables entrants: Facing Afirca,
helping the victims of Noma - a flesh-eating disease affecting
many children throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
Gary and Seb work for a British insurance company, and
this is the first time either of them have attempted any
challenge of this size; though they have previously competed
in shorter road races and a triathlon.
Please visit their website at www.challenge630.com, from
where you can make a donation, find out more about their
challenge, or see how you can become involved in helping
them towards their target.
Facing Africa
Facing Africa is a UK based charity that sends teams of
surgeons to Africa to repair the horrendous effects of
the Noma disease. This disease occurs where lack of access
to medical care, poor hygiene and nutrition combine to
turn minor facial lesions gangrenous. The resulting infection
then eats away at the flesh and bone of the face of the
victim. Often, they are left with terrible deformities
that affect their ability to eat, communicate, and take
part in their society.
Registered charity no. 1072505
