A sentimental journey
to success
Last year Fabien ran for his friend’s niece,
Athina, who’s suffering from a skin disease
called ichtyose. During the long stage he was given
two IVs for dehydration. The doctors strongly advised
him to pull out of the race. Feeling disappointed
and emotional in front of the Merzouga dunes he promised
himself he’d come back and complete the MARATHON
DES SABLES. He’s even kept the bracelet showing
he pulled out, mending it each time it broke. He
returned this year with another objective. On stage
2 he proposed to his girlfriend by email saying whatever
her reply it should be announced by Patrick Bauer.
And it was!
Happy coincidence during the long stage, he finds
himself in the same place as last year and bumps
into the same competitor who’d let off his
own distress flare when Fabien was in difficulty.
He’s now preparing to get married, and proudly
sports his medal in place of what he describes as
the “bracelet of shame”. Well-merited
victory for this courageous softie.
