Altogether
now !
They’re the first ever Malaysian runners taking
part in the MARATHON DES SABLES. And it’s all
down to Thaming. He heard about MARATHON DES SABLES
in 1997 via friends but never had the chance to come
along. Now the dream’s become reality. Wanting
to share the experience of surpassing his limits,
he naturally looked for team-mates. John and Ngae
Koh are at his side. John had heard about the race
but had somehow never found info in English ! Accustomed
to challenges, this is without doubt his biggest
to date.
Once in Morocco, John was expecting to see photos
of the desert like on darbaroud.com… and yet
didn’t spy a single one on the way down to
the bivouac from Ouarzazate. Now he’s seen
so many ….. They seem never-ending.
He has fighting spirit saying « Your eyes
on it, your heart to it, then you can make it ».
Ngae Koh was also drawn to the race by word of mouth.
He’s driven by the desire to raise money for
a hospice for the terminally ill and to surpass his
own personal limits.
One thing unites all three guys : discovering the
desert. They’ve already been blown away by
the landscapes. Sadly Thaming won’t be capturing
it on film. After a 4-day trip in Paris, he arrives
on the MDS bivouac only to discover his memory card
is full and the battery flat as a pancake. He’s
taken it well, and is lucky enough to have John as
a team-mate: he’s now the photographer for
the whole team.
