Since discovering the MARATHON DES SABLES last year
with her husband, Valérie is what you’d
called one contented woman.
She’s back for the “annual pilgrimage” on
her own this year but family is never far from her
mind. Her ruck-sack is plastered with their photos
for a start. Like some other competitors, she’s
not interested in her position ; what counts is conserving
enough energy to make it to the finish line. When
asked what she’s got out of MDS Valérie
talks of its virtues, « forget about seeing
a psychiatrist, just do MDS » she comments
with a smile. Discovering MDS is like meeting a new
person, finding out how to get by with the strict
minimum and above all sharing in other people’s
suffering. It makes sense really: she’s running
this year for her friend who can’t have children. « I
said to myself if I can finish the race she’ll
find a solution to her problem too »..
