Invitation
Bernard
Fouillat (69), a baker, carefully carried with him
on the MDS tracks his famous pear cake,
which he promised Patrick Bauer last year. He had
to resist the temptation to devour it for over
200km and is expecting Patrick any moment.
Reflex
A hot air balloon took off this morning
on the starting line. Funnily enough, runners made
the
most of its shadow, finding an unexpected shelter
from the sun and thus drawing another hot air balloon
on the ground.
Incongruous
Competitors were treated to a classical
music concert tonight, with 18 singers and musicians
from the Paris opera standing right in the middle
of their bivouac. A surreal piece of sophistication
deep in the desert. And a striking contrast with
competitors who slowly left their tents, limping,
moaning, somehow reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s
zombies in the Thriller video clip…
Duet
We have twin sisters on the race this year
: American runners Elizabeth and Lara Zaitzeff
(542 and 543).
They are both running their first MDS, they are
both lawyers, and needless to say, they run together.
Mission
We can’t give you names because it’s
still a secret but a very serious marriage proposal
is brewing in a British tent. Fellow tent-mates
are set on finding flowers for the bride-to-be.
It’s a sub-challenge within the main challenge:
this race is getting pitiless.
Far-sighted
Vivacious Australian runner Francis
Dodd (483) went for a mild pace today. All his
tent-mates
were waiting for him on the finish line, where
he got about 20 minutes before cut off time. He
made the most of his stroll to collect wood for
the evening fire: he probably thought his bag wasn’t
heavy enough, or that he was going too fast. Anyway,
this gem of a man got to the bivouac in time to
make dinner – and was most welcome. |
