In previous editions, he came 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th
of the Marathon des Sables. But when asked if he’s
aiming for the first place this year, he remains
cautious: “there’s no way I’ll
go for a full on attack, it will be a difficult race
from the start, so I’ll have to see how my
back’s doing first”. Trouble with his
sciatic nerve forced him to abandon the race in 2006.
He’s back for a kind of trial race, the last
chance he’s prepared to take: “if it
doesn’t go well, I probably won’t come
back”. But should his back leave him in peace,
we can clearly expect him amongst the first, although
he will keep quiet about that, true to his own style.
He’d rather save his breath for a tribute to
Lahcen Ahansal, who won the MDS ten times and is
not running this year: “his stepping out is
a proof of humility, he’s as good as his word,
a proper display of sportsmanship”.
