Before coming here, this Portuguese competitor had never run a course longer than a marathon. For the 75,5 km long stage, he was lucky enough to start at 9am, before the heat wave, with the first group of runner – a stroke of luck indeed: he was 51st at the general ranking! The second group, the top 50, never caught up with him and Helder had the privilege to get to the finish line first. He ended up 16th in the stage ranking – more than respectable for a beginner. He was beaming: “ I really prepared myself psychologically; I remember all the good times in my life, I refuse to listen to music. I think a lot about my father in law who is ill and that gives me the courage to go on”. Could yesterday’s remarkable performance give make him ambitious? “ My priority for now is to devour a bacalhau a lagareiro, salted cod with garlic and potatoes, it’s delicious!
