He makes no secret about it : « I aim to be the fastest Brit” is what he wrote on his registration form. After four stages, this very determined runner extremely near the mark. To understand his motivation, let’s go back in time to 2006, when he had to give up at stage 3 because he mismanaged his water supplies – unforgivable for this high flying accountant who simply couldn’t let it go by. « seeing the other runners with their medal was really hard, I swore to myself I’d be back”. But before that, Ian Sharman went from marathon to marathon with great ardour. A hundred kilometres training a week and thirty marathons a year are definitely enough to shape up one’s calves. He confessed he suffered on the long stage - “the worst day of my life” – but what could possibly prevent him from making his “best Brit” title official this week end? And it will only be justice.
