Soeren LILLEOERE is tall and on fine form. This young 29 year-old Dane would appear to have luck on his side in this marathon which he is undertaking for the 1st time.
Nevertheless, Soeren is taking an unusual and new approach to the MDS. He is actually a diabetic, having been diagnosed in November 2002 at the age of 22. It was at this time that he began running and training intensively. He ran his first marathon the following year, to show those close to him, who were worried and influenced by some stereotypes about the consequences of the condition, that normal life could go on and that it was possible to push yourself to the limit like any other runner taking on an extreme challenge.
Soeren will combine high level sports training with acute knowledge of his body in the face of the condition, thanks to medical techniques which he controls autonomously. 10 % of his bag capacity is taken up by instruments to analyse carbohydrate rates, the injections which he needs to give himself (10 per day) and daily treatment products which will also vary in accordance with the intensity of the effort he makes and with the heat. This is one of the unknown factors he will encounter on the route: Denmark isn’t well known for its hot spots. Soeren trained wearing extra layers of sweaters, but he will discover how his body reacts in a totally new climate and the consequences of this on his metabolism...
Soeren is running alone, taking a risk in the event of an attack of loss of consciousness, even though he is equipped to act quickly if he feels an attack coming on. This marathon will be full of unknowns and risks for him. He knows as much, and sets off as much for an adventure as to get to know himself: Soeren, we admire your courage. Have a good race!
