Yolanda Linschooten (D90-NDL)
«I must absolutely keep my second position in the general ranking!»
43 years old Yolanda Linschooten (90-NDL) is a Dutch writer and photographer. It’s her first Marathon des Sables and she hasn’t come to do camel watching in the desert: after the 4th stage, she’s still 2nd in the women’s general ranking. And she intends to remain there.
Q: Yolanda, this 25th Sultan Marathon des Sable is a first for you, how did you hear about the event?
A: I like ultra sports, especially mountain marathons. When you’re into that sort of things, you’re always looking for new challenges. The MDS is a must: I couldn’t not know about it! That’s why I’m here, and I must say it is extraordinary.
Q: Have you ever taken part in similar events?
R: Not for the time being, no, but I will be doing the Mont-Blanc Ultra-trail (UTMB). And I’ve done the great race on the Réunion island.
Q: It’s not so often that someone who takes part for the first time find themselves so high in the ranking. What is your secret? And what’s your ultimate objective?
R: I think how well you do depends on many things. I spent a lot of time training very hard, and that pays off. There’s also the attitude. Mental strength is crucial on that type of event! Last but certainly not list, there’s the atmosphere: whether you come first or last, you get the same cheers on the finish line, and that’s just wonderful!
As to my objective, it’s very simple: I absolutely want to remain in second position! I think it’s more reasonable considering the time gap between me and the lead…
Q: A last question, Yolanda: you are a photographer, it must be frustrating for you not to be able to take pictures when you’re running in the midst of fabulous landscapes?!
R: You are so right! It’s very frustrating, as it would be to any professional photographer! But I’m here for something else so I must focus on the race and forget my camera!
