« Help for Heroes », a team for wounded service men and women
Each year the Sultan Marathon des Sables welcome teams and individual competitors running for charities, be they dedicated to medical research or to supporting developing countries: running can be for one’s pleasure as well as for a good cause.
This year’s edition is no exception to the rule: “Facing Africa”, “Association Go-Sénégal”, “Solidarité MDS”, “Bon pied bon œil”, and many others are all running for charitable causes. And so is “Team Ubique”, running for the benefit of Help for Heroes, raising funds for British soldiers wounded in action in Afghanistan or in Irak for instance.
It’s worth mentioning that British competitors were historically the first to run for charities on the MDS, before other nationalities joined in.
David Dixon (758, UK), team member, explains that Help for Heroes’s objective was to raise 25 millions sterling pounds, a goal they reached two years ago, as tea The Sultan MDS Help for Heroes team still chose to support this cause as recent conflicts called for continuous efforts.
It shows that beyond a personal search for adventure and stretching one’s limits, The Sultan Marathon des Sables conveys priceless human values: altruism, compassion, border-less solidarities, to name but a few.
