Sahara News N°34 - September 1999999

Whether experienced runners or walkers, if there's one thing all the participants in the MARATHON DES SABLES have in common it's a taste for physical effort. The desire to surpass yourself implies knowing how your physical and moral capabilities will be called upon during the race. The awareness of the effort involved in crossing the finish line makes each one of you proud of yourselves and admiring of your rivals. Those that bring up the rear admire the winners but are also then the subject of admiration.
At this very moment, in around thirty countries around the world, men and women are preparing to live through an adventure they've been dreaming about for some time. In Hong Kong, New York, Rome or Tokyo, people are training to be ready to give the MARATHON DES SABLES their very best. Even though we may wish to satisfy the largest number of people possible we remain committed to it not turning into a huge anonymous event. The MARATHON DES SABLES will always be open to everyone without discrimination, but it is, and must remain, a race with a difference. There will therefore be only 700 of you encouraging one another in this 15th edition.
At the rate enrolments are going, it may be that many of you will be disappointed. To quench your thirst for adventure and running, AOI has created the DESERT CUP, with the first edition in November 2000. You will each automatically receive the enrolment brochure for the 1st DESERT CUP in early February 2000. In running around 170 km non-stop in under 60 hours, with self-sufficiency in food, in the sand then on the hills of the rift, it will be much more than a consolation race, believe us...
In terms of sport and adventure: it looks pretty promising as they say ! And that's just what we like !
We'll be in touch soon..

Around forty participants including 3 Brits, 2 Americans, 1 Swiss and 1 Jordanian will have the pleasure of being the first to discover the DESERT CUP itinerary. Of course, the race will hardly be a tourist trip and much effort will be needed to make it to the end, but the scenery offers more than enough to satisfy the most indifferent eyes. Whether it's WADI RUM indelibly linked to Lawrence of Arabia, the plateaus of the rift valley where you can see Araba wadi, or the Nabataean city of Pétra with its palaces and temples carved in the multicoloured rock, one beautiful sight after another will make the route hard to forget.
Thanks to its life-size configuration, this confidential trial run will allow us to fine-tune all the organisation and offer a quality service for the 1st official edition in November 2000.

THE BEST OF MOROCCO
Incredible but true, our representative in Great Britain has already filled his quota of enrolments. He tells us that runners who wish to leave from London should contact him on (00) 01380 828 533.
Departure for Ouarzazate 6 April with a night in hotel, returning to London 17 April.

AOI FRANCE
Though enrolment is over in Great Britain, at the mid-September point there are still around fifty available places in France but don't leave it too long to register. By mid-October and maybe earlier, we'll have to close registration and put a waiting list in place since numbers are limited to 700, foreign offices included.

IN NEED OF ADVICE ?
If you've already enrolled in the 15th MDS and wish to get in touch with runners from your region who've participated in the MDS before, call us and we'll give you their contact details.

*WHY NOT ?
When you're a Russian sports instructor and you hear about the MDS you say:*Patchemou niet? That's how a young woman called Natalia KASAKOVA has found herself heading for the Moroccan desert to join 700 runners who will have asked themselves the same question.

THE TEAMS BESOIN D'ESPACE
They'll be leaving their filing tools in the workshop to get a breath of fresh air, get their feet in the sand and look up at the stars. The wheels of the AEROSPATIALE/MATRA/AIRBUS NANTES team should turn like a dreamjudging by the hard work the 3 metal fitters Jean-M. LE SQUERN, Franck LEGUEVEL and Dominique CHAILLOU are putting in to polishing their act.

A TOUTE VAPEUR !
Temperatures are rising in the VAPEUR AVENTURE CPCU team. The three experienced regulators Geneviève SAÏDI, Eric MAILLET and Jean-P.VASSEUR will be making sure that the three newcomers Jacques BOURNOUVILLE, Eric CHOISY and Thierry LEMARCHAND aren't left out in the cold.

LES FENNECS D'ATHLETE'S FOOT
Bolstered by their experience last year, Nicolas AUTRET, Philippe RAULET and Dominique PEUDUPIN will be giving their all to help Yves LEGENDRE (2nd V3 in 1999) take first place in his category. When you remember that last year's winner René DAUTERIBES is coming back, it promises to be a real shoot-out.
