Sahara News N°35 - October 1999999

Hello to you all !
The deadline for enrolment for the 15th MARATHON DES SABLES has now been reached. From now on, there's a waiting list in place as there are always a certain number of people who withdraw. So don't lose hope: if you're on the waiting list, there's a real chance of your being able to take part in the year 2000 edition of the MARATHON DES SABLES.
For those of you who can't be in Morocco: take heart. At the end of November 2000, the 1st DESERT CUP will be ready to welcome all lovers of running, desert and adventure alike. Registration files will be sent to you at the beginning of the year; so this time don't wait till the last moment to enroll...
All the team are still dazzled by the fantastic scenery we were met with during the last reconnaissance mission in Jordan. Our new baby is quite simply wonderful! We can offer no better advice than to hurry come and see it for yourselves.
As for the MARATHON DES SABLES, we'll be marking its 15th birthday in the style to which it's accustomed and which it merits. All the participants will be able to surpass themselves as they move through the kind of beautiful environment that offers something different each hour of the day. Weariness just doesn't exist in the desert; contemplation takes it place.
Good luck with the training and we'll be in touch soon.
ATLANTIDE ORGANISATION Internationale

The itinerary has now been fully tracked out and the race will be run over168 km with 13 checkpoints for competitors to pick up water. Without going into detail, we can tell you that the first 100 kms will be run on beach-type sand, sometimes firm, but often running and loose. The next 20 kms or so will be largely undulating tracks, before giving way to uneven mountainous tracks with more than 10% slope to get up to 1500 metres altitude. That should be enough to satisfy the most demanding of runners...
Once well into our stride and having done the necessary fine-tuning, the race will be open to all for its 1st edition late November or early December 2000. Setting up an altogether different race: it's surely not a bad way to wind up the century and there's little doubt the DESERT CUP will soon be one of the races you'll be proud to put on your list.

A POSSIBLE WINNER

Watch out for number 77: behind it lies a real favourite. Having been crowned last year for the 4th time, Claude COMPAIN proudly wears his age on his breast-plate. He's the man to beat if you want to get onto the podium in the Veteran IV category. It won't be an easy task we can tell you.

SIGN HERE PLEASE !
Patrick BACCHETA will be sporting a tee-shirt covered in signatures from all his friends. When he's not encouraging his comrades to do graffiti, he runs round a stadium to raise money for underprivileged children to go on holiday. One small point: he runs for 24 hours.

TEAMS HELICOPTER !
In the film "Jour de Fête", Jacques TATI proved an admirable postman. Now it's the turn of the 3 runners from the "l'ASPTT LYON " (Lyon Post Office) to enjoy living through a few "jours de fête" of their own... Gérard PETIT, Claude GAY and Jacques MARECHET will be loyal to their posts when the race kicks off.

GENEROUS BRETONS
What a heart the "AR ROAZHONIZ" team have! Didier LE MAUFF (15th in 99) is running to give a sound and healthy image to adventure sports, Patrick RENAULT (39th in 99) to push himself even harder than last year and Pierrick LETANNEUR (70th in 99) so that a close friend feels encouraged to see through the year 2000. With that kind of motivation there's every chance they'll improve on their 7th place in 1999.

TEAMS HIT THE DESERT CUP TOO "LE LOTUS BLEU"
They're 3 doctors, they're into Tintin and they wouldn't miss out on adventure for anything in the world. Bruno THOMAS, Philippe NEUSCHWANDER and Alain GIFFARD love nothing more than having feet in the sand, head in the stars. Mad about the desert, they'll be in for a real treat in discovering JORDAN and joining up with their mates from MDS.

THOMSON
Anyone who loves running knows Karim MOSTA. As an emblematic figure in the company THOMSON, he just goes from one adventure to another. Having teamed up with Christian GINTER for quite a few years now for the MDS, they make a formidable duo. Another globe-trotter in the form of Marc LOUBOUTIN will be joining them to make up the DESERT CUP team.
