No sooner does a child start walking, than it tries to run; driven not least by the fun of seeing its parents run after it. Some years later whether it's a show of independence or playfulness, you see the same attitude amongst adult runners. In a bid to satisfy this youthful passion, AOI offers playing fields that live up to runners' expectations. In Morocco or Jordan everyone has fun staying ahead of their pursuers or trying to catch up ...

A reminder about the MARATHON DES SABLES: don't forget 31 October is the closing date for reservations. After this date, available places may be on the short side so check with the office in your country about the chances of enrolment.

In a few days, 236 competitors from around twenty countries will be embarking on one of the most difficult races on the international sporting calendar. Some will be trying to beat the record, but for most participants, motivation lies in simply being on the list of finishers. Only the top runners will be doing so in under 24 hours, but with 62 hours to complete the course, walkers certainly have their place on the DESERT CUP. In any case, whatever the objective, the only sure way of making it is to pace oneself correctly.

Aware of the physical and psychological difficulties competitors will have to face during the 168km of the race, all the AOI team are working enthusiastically to offer everyone the best support possible.

See you soon in a legendary desert.

TIMING DESERT CUP

Desert Cup Jordan telecom : 04 -10 november 2001

MEDICAL FILE

The medical certificate and ECG report must be dated the month of October.
Important : the medical certificate to be completed is the one in the registration file sent by AOI. Do not forget to bring both these documents to Jordan for 5 November; you cannot begin the race without them.

SALT
The 8 salt pastilles given to competitors provide a total of 4g of salt. So you need to take 4 pastilles per day to get the necessary daily 2g of salt. Take them each evening before sleeping or resting, in order to improve water storage in the body and make rehydration easier. During physical effort, remember to take in some salty foodstuffs.

HOT AND COLD
In the Wadi Rum section, temperatures can be high (24°C on average), so you must remember to drink regularly. In the mountainous section, and particularly at night, temperatures call fall to 4°C with winds averaging 80 km/h (including peaks of 120km/h...). It's therefore essential to have suitable clothing.

For the 2nd consecutive year, Jordan Telecom is associating its name with the Desert Cup.
In a country that's developing rapidly, telephone links are crucial in keeping people in close contact.
In partnering this event Jordan Telecom wishes to underline its attachment to values such as solidarity and voluntarism - well embodied in its head of marketing Olivier FAURE (F) who's competing in the race himself.

Doc Trotter

Specialising in medical aid on hostile terrain, the 21 doctors and nurses of the "DOC TROTTER" team are there to keep an eye on competitors' medical state. They know blisters and other sores inside out.

AOI
Course officials, trackers, logisticians, timekeepers and controllers all have experience of MDS and the Desert Cup. In addition to the French volunteers, around twenty Jordanians will be part of the support team. They'll be on duty for almost 3 days, giving 100% of themselves, and handing out plenty of much-welcomed smiles.

Solar Energy

Thanks to the efforts of Gilles Flamant (F) and Jean-Pierre VOZEL (F), who raised funds through their Internet site, a photovoltaic pumping station was installed during the 16th MDS in the small village of M'FISS. The close collaboration between these two warm-hearted sportsmen, TOTAL ENERGIE, AOI and ER Rachidia Regional Water Board has helped to make daily life that bit easier for a thousand or so people. It's now the 5th pump to have been installed on the MDS race route over the last few years.

Team
No team can be enrolled once in Morocco. The exact name of the team and its members must be noted when the reservation file is sent in.
