SAHARA NEWS - March 2002 - Numero 55
N° 55
EDITO
As the race looms large on the horizon, everyone is in the final stages of preparation and you have to admit the tension is mounting slightly. This is natural and it would be strange if it were otherwise - such is the importance of the event for each participant. You should keep in mind, however, that whilst the organisers are quite rightly thinking about everything that might pose a problem during the event to make sure it's avoided, competitors should remember they are there above all to enjoy it.
There is no shortage of things in life to worry about. So try to keep everything in perspective and set off light-hearted with the aim of living this extraordinary week to the full.
The idea of being ready or not ready is something of an abstract notion, difficult to discern in one go. In any case the desert will do its own thing, answering to some extent the question. You have to be humble and accept the shape it takes on at the time. Aiming for such and such a place in the rankings is quite illusory when faced with the host of factors which can get in the way of the slightest objective. Moral of the tale: in order to finish well and appreciate one's performance, you first of all have to cross the finish line.
We look forward to seeing you in the desert and thanks to you all for placing your trust in us.
AOI

TIMING MARATHON DES SABLES

17th Edition of the Marathon des Sables 05 to 15 Avril 2002

WATER FOR THE DESERT
Over the last few years, Gilles FLAMANT (F) has done much to get solar pumps installed in the desert. This year another MDS regular Michel BACH (F) has joined him in his project. AOI had noticed that major maintenance and renovation works were necessary, and this will shortly be seen to thanks to the generous contribution of the company GIFI.

CHECKPOINTS
Competitors must go through all checkpoints; failure resulting in penalties (see Art.27 and 28).
The checkpoints are: beginning of each stage (at water distribution point),checkpoints during the stage, end of stage (at water distribution point).

SURVIVAL KIT
New distress flares will be handed out to competitors. They weigh 350g, and

MARATHON DES SABLES

Participants
607 participants have enrolled this year, 56 women and no less than 38 official teams. For this 17th edition more than 30 nationalities will be present.

Forbidden
Gas containers are not allowed aboard flights. Not only will any competitor whose container gets confiscated be deprived of a hot meal, but the lives of others can be put in danger. What's more, those in charge of cleaning up the bivouac have had the nasty surprise of seeing rubbish bags explode in their faces when waste is burnt.
So no gas containers. Thank you !

Ranking on internet
The rankings available on our internet site will be provisional. They'll be shown as and when the results come in, so will not be exhaustive straightaway. If a name does not appear it may be that the runner is not yet ranked or that he/she has not yet arrived. The particular conditions in the
desert slow down the treatment of information; you should therefore not worry and consult the update on the site at a later date.
