SAHARA NEWS - APRIL 2004
N° 71
EDITO

The start of the race is looming large and once again this year the 600 runners will be representing many different countries. Amongst them are a few internationally renowned athletes, but equally many men and women whose main aim is to get over the finish line. For over a week they will be living together: showing courage, solidarity, enthusiasm and sharing thousands of little adventures. They’ll put aside their differences and show you can live together in peace. That’s a great response when you consider how crazy the world we live in can be.
Happily people are capable of acting in ways that show them in a good light. So it’s perhaps timely to pay homage to all the MARATHON DES SABLES volunteers who enable competitors to live out their passion. They don’t always have an easy job and as well as giving up their time for the race, they have the kind of human touch everyone appreciates. They are hereby officially thanked!

See you soon in the desert.

Specialists in supplying medical assistance on hostile terrain, the DOC TROTTER team, consisting of 31 doctors and nurses, will look after the health of the participants. They are no stranger to blisters and all the other aches and pains familiar to runners and they should be consulted as quickly as possible to avoid any injuries becoming more serious.

SUPPORT FOR BRAHIM
Despite a small coronary which needed surgery, all is well with our friend Brahim EL JAOUAL. He was in intensive care for a few days but is now back in his room and will soon be following a physiotherapy programme in hospital. He’ll then return home to rest and will hopefully be coming to say hello to everyone at the end of the race. More information will shortly be available on the www.darbaroud.com web-site with a little message from the man himself.

INTERNET RANKINGS
The rankings on our internet site will be provisional. They'll be posted up as and when competitors come in and will not therefore be complete straightaway. If a runner's name doesn't appear it may simply mean they have not yet been ranked or haven't yet arrived. The particularly challenging conditions of working in the desert slow up the treatment of information; you should therefore not panic or worry but consult the update on the site at a later time.
N.B.: 2 hour time difference between Morocco and France (17h in Morocco = 19h in France)
