As you know AOI’s philosophy is to offer competitors a wonderful, sporting adventure without mishap! Not all race organisers necessarily see things in the same way, but we think it is indispensable to have all the logistic, human and especially aerial and medical support to be able to carry out a DESERT CUP worthy of its name. To take an example, we were able to see the effectiveness of such a support system during the last MARATHON DES SABLES where we had to deal with very unusual weather conditions.
At the time of writing, AOI has still not received the guarantees from the Malian government and its institutional partners which would allow us to organise an event with the necessary security measures in place. As we are well aware of the difficulties in organising such a race, AOI refuses to take competitors into a situation where problems could quickly become major, even insurmountable. This is why, after lengthy reflection, the race management team regrets to inform you of its decision to cancel the race despite the prejudice to competitors and the considerable work already undertaken by AOI France and all its representatives abroad.
Over the last twenty-two years, AOI has never cancelled a race, whether Malian, Jordanian or Moroccan. This has therefore been a very difficult decision but it is better to analyse and look reality in the face.
As in previous years the photographers (F) were present from 08 to 15 April to immortalise competitors' feats on the 21st MARATHON DES SABLES 2006.

Airport authorities strictly forbid all gas bottles aboard flights. In addition to the flight security question, during the MARATHON DES SABLES there is also the risk of explosion when the AOI environment team incinerates rubbish on the bivouac.
So no gas bottles ! Thank you.

What is Noma ?
Noma (cancrum oris) is an acute and ravaging gangrenous infection affecting the face. The victims of Noma are mainly young children caught in a vicious circle of extreme poverty and chronic malnutrition.
Noma begins with ulcers in the mouth. If the condition is detected in the early stage, progression can be prevented with the use of common antibiotics and immediate nutritional rehabilitation. If left untreated, as happens in most cases, the ulcers progress to Noma at an alarming pace. The next stage is extremely painful when the cheeks or lips begin to swell and the victim's general condition deteriorates. Within a few days, the swelling increases and a blackish furrow appears and the gangrenous process sets in and, after the scab falls away and a gaping hole is left in the face. It is estimated that the mortality rate reaches up to an alarming 90%.
Survivors, those whose pitiful faces can be seen on these pages, can arguably be described as the fortunate ones. However, their lives will never be the same and they will suffer three main afflictions - facial disfigurement, functional impairment and social outcast.
The scar tissue restricts jaw movement and a child who survives is unlikely ever to be able to speak or eat normally again. In infancy, some children lose their lips and soon die of starvation, as they are unable to breast-feed.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates an annual incidence of 500,000 victims world-wide. This means that around 450,000 children aged between infancy and puberty will die each year, mainly in sub-Saharan countries from Senegal to Ethiopia, a region also known as "the Noma belt".

FACING AFRICA
publication le 06/03/2007
Shaun Bacon (AUS - D487) is a Melbourne teacher who is about to embark on the gruelling Marathon Des Sables in the Sahara Desert.
It’s arguably the toughest footrace on earth, covering 243km over 7 days in the Moroccan desert where temperatures get up to 50C and plunge to freezing at night. Participants in this race must carry all their supplies for the week including food, clothing, sleeping bag, cooking and medical kit. Only water is distributed en route.
He’s doing it to raise money for the charity Facing Africa, which is working with children affected by the disfiguring condition Noma.
Shaun is also a keen wildlife photographer.
Your medical certificate and electrocardiogram must be made between 1st and 31th march 2011.
The medical certificate to be made validate by the doctor (rather a doctor of the sport) is in the registration form sent by AOI.
It is the only document recognized by the organization. Any other certificate will be refused and will entail penalties (See ART 24, 26 and 27). The signature and the stamp of the doctor must be applied on it.
The electrocardiogram of rest with signature and the stamp of the doctor must be applied there and must be necessarily accompanied with its plan.
Please do not forget these documents to be necessarily presented on April 2nd in Morocco, at the risk of refusal of departure of the race.
The electrocardiogram of effort is advised for runners over 40 years. It is not compulsory and does not replace the ECG and its plan. He can be joined to the medical certificate and presented in Morocco.
ABSENCE OF the MEDICAL CERTIFICATE ANDOR THE ECG (art 25) If they are not signed (with the stamp) and not dated correctly, these documents will not be accepted. They can exceptionally be made on the spot for a fixed 200-euro extra-fees. Then, to take the departure, the doctor will have to give his agreement; otherwise the competitor will be put except race.
Then be far-sighted!!!
MEDICAL CARE (ART. 17) Why do we speak about vital medical care? Because without this assistancethe runner would be forced to the abandonment or would risk problems of health. It essentially concerns the cases of dehydration requiring a drip, but the poseof a plaster also goes into this category. It entraines systematically a penalty and can be practised only once. It can be decided only on medical opinion
EXCEPTIONAL ASSISTANCE HYDRIQUE (ART. 17) It can be asked by the competitor to the marshals or imposed by the medical team. It is a question of attributing a supplementary bottle of water to a competitor who badly managed his water, badly closed its bottle or lost its tin, but also if he feels the beginning of dehydration without requiring a drip.
Ground assistance : It is specified that any outside assistance is strictly prohibited.
Fraudulently receiving outside assistance with food or water will result in a 3 hours penalty the first time, and elimination from the race on the second occasion.
Vital medical assistance (perfusion, plaster cast etc.) will result in a two hours penalty the first time, and elimination from the race on the second occasion.
The use of transportation, either with 2 or 4 wheels will result in elimination from the race.
Any competitor who mistakenly wanders far off course, necessitating a lengthy search effort, will lose his/her security deposit (see ART. 28).
The receiving of extra water in particular instances (due to lack, loss or leaking bottle), and with the agreement of the race stewards or on the advice of the medical team, will result in a 30-minute penalty the first time, one hour the second time and disqualification from the race on the third occasion.

Once again this year, AOI offers you to send emails free of charge to a correspondent of your choice. Around 15 computers will be made available at the “email concurrents/competitors’ email” area.
Please be patient when waiting for your turn. You can send a second email for free, but will have to begin the queue again.
Due to increasingly draconian anti spam procedures, you can send your message to only ONE address. You should therefore determine with your correspondent the group of people you wish to forward your message to, before leaving for Morocco.
Note : messages are sent via satellite so computers are not on line. Emails are sent at the end of the day. You cannot send attachments.
Other services on the bivouac:
Telephone and fax : on the bivouac the company TD com will sell a phonecard 3 euros/minute.
Communication (email, fax, telephone) is made by satellite only.
Remember to tell your family, friends and sponsors that they can leave you messages during the MARATHON DES SABLES, but
only from 02 to 08 april 2011. Go to the website and follow the instructions. http://www.darbaroud.com
section "écrire aux concurrents/write to competitors"
After 08 april, this email service will no longer be operational. Only messages with surname, first name and race ID number will be transferred. Do not send attachments (e.g. photos). This will cancel the message. Messages will be given to competitors on the bivouac every day.
Note: AOI cannot transfer messages posted on the FORUM. .

EDITO
It’s thought the Earth dates from around 4.6 billion years ago.
Suppose we transposed this on a 24H clock, the human race would appear in the last minute and modern man in the last few seconds. In this short lapse of time, man has undeniably proven to be of superior intelligence. Our faculties of analysis and creativity have made us the most evolved species on the planet. It took less than 2000 years for a few savants (from Aristotle to Newton) to show us all (or nearly all) how evident certain natural laws were. We now know the Earth is not flat and everything does not turn around it, no more than around the sun.
As a way of situating ourselves in the cosmos, we know for example that it took 240 million years for our solar system to go round our own galaxy and that there are billions of other galaxies besides the Milky Way. To sum up, whether it’s in space or time, the place and size of man seem to be miniscule.
And yet, in the space of 200 years, we’ve managed to use up all the fossil energy reserves on the planet and contribute to the fastest-ever recorded global warming. Not a day goes by without information announcing the most catastrophic predictions for the next 50 years.
It’s alarming news and the risks are real, but there’s no question of giving up. All is not lost. We simply have to change our habits quickly and reduce our energy consumption as much as possible. We can trust our wonderful survival instincts and the genius of Stone descendants of Cro-Magnon to adapt and find solutions.
It’s altogether feasible and runners on MARATHON DES SABLES prove it. For more than 20 years, thousands of them have been confronted with this kind of problem. Every edition they have to be ingenious in finding the right equipment and carrying as little weight as possible. They have to adapt their energy consumption and not run out of reserves. As for water, managing it becomes an absolute priority.
We hope every individual will become aware of the chance he/she has to live on such a fantastic little planet and do everything possible to preserve its resources and beauty.

Christian GINTER Francois CRESCI
publication le 26/10/2007
Many runners come back regularly to do the MARATHON DES SABLES, but Christian GINTER (F) and François CRESCI (F) have been back every year since the third edition, that’s to say 20 MDS in a row! That’s an awful lot of hours and kms in the desert. Christian is from the Jura and lives and works in Lamoura as a chef. Modest to a tee he’s often finished the MDS in the top twenty. He won the team race on the 9th MDS and later won then came second in the DESERT CUP in Jordan. Long distance running is his forte: his short but economical stride acting like a perfect metronome. His pace is so distinctive the regulars can pick him out miles away: “Oh look, there goes Christian GINTER ». François lives in Grenoble and works at a printers. Like Christian, he’s been among the winners. Always eager to grab a few places, he still wants to win the veteran 3 category, employing the same determination he showed 20 years back. Of course he’s vowed to stop once that’s done, but there’s every reason to believe he’ll be here for a few years yet… As for Christian, MDS is part of his life. At the age of 53, he hopes to participate in a few more editions, sharing the adventure with his son Anthony who’s shone out on MDS the last 2 years. During the awards ceremony at Ouarzazate in April, Patrick BAUER was delightedeto award the “Passion Trophy” to these two men who’ve been such a part of MDS.

Markus Schar and Joshua Kennedy White live in Australia and will run the 23rd MDS for a good cause. They want to use their time and efforts in training for this race as worthwhile as possible and decided to raise money to help people around the world to regain their eyesight. Around 50% of blindness in the world is caused by cataracts. This can be overcome with a relatively simple operation taking approximately 20 minutes and costing as little as AUD 25.00. Their goal is to reach the finishing line in Morocco knowing that all our efforts have saved at least 600 people's vision. To reach their goal, they need your support to run the 3000 km each for their training and to finish the MDS. You can help by buying 'Km-Shares' at AUD 25.00 each and save someone's eyesight in the process. Why The Fred Hollows Foundation? The Foundation's vision of a world where no one is needlessly blind and where Indigenous Australians enjoy the same health as all Australians is reason enough to raise money. The Fred Hollows Foundation is inspired by work of the late Professor Fred Hollows, whose vision was for a world where no one was needlessly blind. Help Fred's work live on. [Web site RUN 4 VISION]

Running is an inexpensive, convenient and increasingly popular sport, but some take it to the limit. From sub-zero running in Alaska to the intense heat of the multi-day Sahara Marathon, a number of athletes choose to pit themselves against the elements. Extremes of environment, route and geography are another challenge, from trails through dense jungle to soaring mountain ranges. The rewards are the experiences of a lifetime, the sense of having been to largely unexplored places and the realization of unique ambitions .
Extreme Running takes the reader on a spectacular world tour of ultra foot races. Dealing with preparation, challenges, strategies and the anecdotes and characters behind the races, this book shows the reader inspirational places and people, and shares astonishing and awe-inspiring adventures.
Divided into seven chapters looking at each continent, Extreme Running covers well known races such as the punishing Marathon des Sables and the Badwater Ultramarathon, through to the lesser known Te Houtaewa Challenge on the incredible 90 Mile beach in New Zealand and the Lake Baikal International Ice Marathon entirely run on frozen water. Over 150 stunning images and key data accompany the gripping commentary for each extreme foot race.

TIMING MDS orientation
publication le 14/12/2010
MDS is not an orientation course, but when crossing ergs (dune zones) where it’s very difficult to mark out in a rectilinear way, it’s easier to follow the bearings indicated in the road book than to search for markings…
GPS USAGE
AOI regulation does no forbid the use of GPS. Nonetheless, the organisation will not provide a list of the checkpoints or bivouacs. The GPS coordinates provided in the road book can be easily followed using the GPS compass. With the exception of areas of sand dunes, which are not marked, you must follow the course mapped out by the organisation. Taking shortcuts or any other intentional changes of route outside the pre-established course is officially forbidden (See ART. 22), as they may lead the participant outside the surveillance area. Thanks to intensive surveillance measures, clear and frequent course markings, and the limited number of participants, the AOI has ensured that participants do not take the wrong route.
Please note: The use of a GPS watch does not exonerate participants from the requirement of carrying a classic compass with 1 or 2 degrees precision. (ART. 24)
COMPASS A true compass allows you to get your bearings efficiently; it’s not a gadget. For MDS, it must be graduated every 1 or 2 degrees, failing which penalties will be applied (See ART. 24, 27 and 28 of race regulations). MDS is not an orientation course, but when crossing ergs (dune zones) where it’s very difficult to mark out in a rectilinear way, it’s easier to follow the bearings indicated in the road book than to search for markings…
Choosing your compass is no easy matter. And prices vary enormously. Apart from the price, you should take account of the following factors:
Robustness: the compass will be tested to the full.
Precision: certain systems eliminate parallaxe problems (e.g. a mirror…)
Risk of rotating element (needle or dial) getting stuck when the case isn’t perfectly horizontal.
Speed of stabilisation: how fast the rotating element returns to its original position.
Fragility: of case, markings, needles, fixing ring
Lights up or not (direction, landmarks...): lighting can make night reading easier.
Readability of graduations and numbers.
Possibility of regulating the magnetic declination.
Graduated ruler for measuring and tracing routes on maps.
Magnifying area (always better than nothing).
Using a compass
A compass can serve to measure the direction of a point in relation to the North. First determine where north is (the red part of the spinning compass needle always points north). Keep it aligned with north on the dial at all times. Turn the compass dial until the orienting arrow (marked on bottom of dial) matches up with the red end of north-south pointer. Once the needle is stable, you can read the angle (bearing) in degrees. Then rotate the rectangular base so that the desired compass bearing is lined up with the direction of travel arrow on the base. Follow the direction of travel arrow. Look along your bearing (keeping compass pointers aligned) and use the compass to focus on a prominent landscape feature that lays along that path (one that you can keep in sight).
To orient a map. Put the map flat and turn it so that the North symbol on the map (compass rose or single arrow) coincides with the direction of the red point of the compass needle. Make sure you don’t position your map near a metal (magnetic) object (a car bonnet for example).
2 types of compass have been selected for competitors:

DOC TROTTER
publication le 18/02/2011
DOCTROTTER are specialists in providing medical aid in extreme conditions.
This year’s team of 45 doctors and nurses will monitor competitors’ state of health. They’re accustomed to blisters and the rest so don’t hesitate to consult them to stop an irritation becoming a serious problem.
This team headed by Dr Peltre, surgeon podologist and lover of extreme sports.
DOC TROTTER looks after both the runners’ state of health (footcare, reanimation) and their morale, which can waver given the toughness of the race and harsh climate. For the 26th SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES, 3 tons of equipment were transported and the medical team used 5 km of plaster, 2,700 compeeds, 125 litres of disinfectant, 230 litres perfusion solute, 15,000 compresses, 2,800 pairs of gloves …
REGULAR TREATMENT Every competitor must possess the treatment he/she needs to ensure daily wellbeing. Aspirin, anti-sickness tablets, adhesive tape, plasters for blisters and medicine (such as Imodium) are the strict minimum. No vitamin supplements will be given without a penalty.
TIMING MDS program
publication le 25/03/2010
from 02 to 12 th april 2010. “special competitor” 4 charter flights have been reserved from Paris.
CHOICE OF HOTELS No hotel in Ouarzazate is big enough to accommodate all MDS competitors. Groups are often organised by nationality for those enrolled with AOI’s representatives. This makes it easier to transfer competitors by bus to the airport to get flights home. In fact some have to get up at 4 a.m. for the transfer. For the last few years our English representative The Best Of Morocco has decided to take care of hotel accommodation after the race for its British competitors. These people are no longer AOI’s responsibility once back in Ouarzazate.
BUS JOURNEY BACK TO OUARZAZATE Every year a few runners are met by friends and family at the final finish line and decide to return to Ouarzazate using their own means of transport. In such cases they are no longer covered by the organisation’s insurance and AOI therefore accepts no responsibility in the event of an accident.
HOTEL ACCOMMODATION On return to Ouarzazate all competitors are in double rooms. For reservation and insurance reasons, only competitors can be accommodated for these two nights. Competitors wishing to share rooms with their families must make their own arrangements.

AFP and MAP : press communiqués sent daily from bivouac.
Les Echos, Le Figaro, La Voix du Nord, Sport, FemmeActuelle, Le Journal Hebdomadaire, Sonovision, Europe 1 and many others will be reporting on MDS 2007
This year as the other year, and for the last bivouac, a classical music concert with the musicians of the "Opera de Paris" was offered to MDS participants. It 's always a magic moment since the 20th MDS edition.
A group of about 11 people played music in the middle of the desert: violins, altos, violoncellos, flute and a young soprano Valérie Yeng-Seng. A last magic night in the desert.
This time it's a real show with the symphonic orchestra made of sixty musicians that you would discover on Royan beach (France - atlantic coast) next July. Since 23 years, the manager Mr. Philippe Tranchet is in charge of setting up this beautiful event, always on the beach... but in front of the sea this time. A lot of emotion...
Due to the specificity of the rules and the location of the course (food self-sufficiency, desert, security issues…) no accompanying members are allowed on the race. But families, friends and sponsors can be at the finish line of the last 2 stages thanks to a special weekend with a dedicated support team.
The trip is organized in parallel with MARATHON DES SABLES (with different flights and hotels from competitors).

New Year’s in Zagora - 7th edition
publication le 19/10/2010
For the past 6 years, Lahcen Ahansal has organized the extreme Zagora Marathon with the help of a highly-qualified team of organisers including his brother, Mohamad, the Akhdar brothers, and the Zagora Province. Date: 31 December 2010.
The competition is open to everyone including registered members of running clubs, unaffiliated runners, as well as male and female runners of all categories. The marathon’s pleasant and varied route, which will take participants through Morocco’s finest cities and palm groves, is punctuated by the Djebel Zagora rise.
Participants will enjoy discovering (or rediscovering) the stunning landscapes of Zagora and the Draa Valley. Lahcen Ahansal believes strongly in his country’s future and strives daily to bring forth its new talents.
His motto: "In each one of us there lays a hidden talent just waiting to be realised". Who better than a champion to help lead young hopefuls to the path towards success, to teach them to beat their personal best? Certain brands claim their bag is suitable—even recommended—for the MDS. Such claims are false. These bags frequently impede the proper positioning of the number—so do beware of the penalties! It is imperative to make sure that straps and/or hip packs are compatible with this very specific rule.
IDENTIFICATION MARKS (ART. 8 and 9)
NUMBER: The AOI requires that numbers worn on chest be placed centrally and on the upper portion of the torso. Please keep this requirement in mind when choosing your bag. (See drawings above, opposite, upside down—what have you). The AOI strongly emphasizes the fact that all backpacks are not suitable with regard to this rule. This also means that participants must make sure they consider this rule when allowing for advertising space and plan accordingly. With the exception of the few square centimetres covered by the number (l=16 x h=18), participants may display their sponsors’ insignia as they please, so long as this display is not excessive. The number must be legible in its entirety: it mustn’t be folded or covered up with a false number, turban, headscarf, jacket, etc.
It is forbidden to physically alter it in any way. The straps must be fastened underneath.
Failure on the part of the participant to respect the proper wearing of the number (i.e. decrease its size by folding it, cutting it, obstructing its visibility, etc.) or failure to respect the proper placement of the number (on the chest and rucksack) can result in the disqualification from the race. Falsification of the number (changing the number, adding text) will lead to immediate disqualification.

Paolo, Karim & Michel have just been introduced into the very select club of runners that run 21 MDS.
Paolo is the Italian AOI representant . He belongs to the people that knows how to manage a running. Rarely in the red, he ends each MDS in good physicals conditions. He is a lively person as well as an emotional person too. He can't hold his emotion when a compatriot wins especially when it's a woman.
Karim participated to more than 100 nature races on 4 continents. This exceptional globe trotter is in a wonderful health condition. he is never hurt. The MDS lover is also involved into relieving the pain of people throught the "Amicale Marocaine des Handicapés". "In 1989 I runned the third edition and I brought back with me a little dog called Zagora (name of the town where I found her). She went with me for the seventh following MDS edition and she became a mascot. I saw this raid growing; it's my favorite race. I participate in it since 1989". For more information : http://www.karimmosta.com or send him a Mail he will always be pleased to advice you : mosta.karim@wanadoo.fr
Michel is one of the most remarquable national & international character. Well-known as the Indian because of his famous head-gear, or disguised in Marquee or in Xmas tree or the Eiffel tower, the minstrel magnetizes the media. He has got a typical "Titi parisien" way of talking such as : "we pay to shit there, but seen that we shit there, it's cheap paid". But he is also the president of the DROIT AU COEUR Association which participate to the set up of solar pump (but not only) in the south of Marrocco. If you want more information about his association contact him bachmichel@aol.com. He is also the manager of the Marne & Gondoire Race which takes place in June near Paris since 4 years.
Besides their passion for the MDS, those 3 guys are very enthousiatics with a clear tendency for the pleasures of life. All the AOI team is happy to have shared these 21 years of feelings with them and congratulate them for their exceptional performance.
Congratulation Paolo, Congratulation Karim, Congratulation Michael ans see you in 2010 on the departure line.

This dynamic helicopter airline company from Paris provides aerial coverage of the race throughout as it has since the 16th edition. (official Supplier).
As Patrick Bauer says “a course like the MARATHON DES SABLES demands very rigorous preparation and the guarantee of optimal security, beginning with aerial coverage. Aviaxess has all the expertise and necessary guarantees and their level of involvement and service has reassured us for many years now ”.
Frédéric Aguettant, managing director of Aviaxess, has considerable experience of the event since he’s been managing the aerial operations since the early days (1986): “Every edition is a moment of excitement and concentration for us. We’re still, as we were the very first time, particularly proud to have been called back as trustworthy partners in this exceptional event”.
With the European launch of the signature "CO2-offsetting Helicopter”, AVIAXESS is taking a new step forward, announcing publicly its commitment to provide ecological helicopters. According to the Stern report on the ecological consequences of climate change, CO2 emissions from the aviation sector today account for 1.6% of total greenhouse gas emissions. According to predictions, these are set to rise to 2.5% by 2050. Although helicopter traffic only makes up 0.1% of this 1.6%, the company AVIAXESS has decided to carry out a voluntary programme in order to contribute to counteracting this prediction. It is investing in the best programmes to offset greenhouse gas emissions. Alongside Climat Mundi, a company which specialises in decreasing its clients’ impact on climate change and audited by Ademe and Veritas, AVIAXESS is selecting programmes from all over the world which have been approved by the authorities and implement an awareness-raising policy. Today, on a voluntary basis, and for the first time in the helicopter sector, their flights are being offset 100% for CO2. In the context of its innovation and development commitments, AVIAXESS has, through certified calculations, identified the total emissions generated by its flights. Through this commitment, Aviaxess confirms their commitment to remove its flights’ carbon footprint. Frédéric Aguettant, the President of AVIAXESS declares: "Along with the whole AVIAXESS team, I am proud to have taken a step forward in the offsetting process. The company is continuing with its policy of innovation as well as cementing its position as a forerunner in the aeronautical service industry".

TIMING MDS preparation of feet
publication le 20/01/2011
Feet : can we prevent the appearance of blister ?
If there was an attitude to be adopted witch can allow to keep "healthy" feet throughout the event, Doctrotter, thanks to the studies led for 10 years, would have been able to deliver 'an instant recipe'.
It is there regrettably nothing, and the arisen of light blister depends on several factors which can vary :
According to the competitors, According to, naturally, degrees of difficulties of the race,
To same one competitor, from one year to the next, according to biological factors appropriate (nutrition, metabolism, factors of cutaneous hydratation),
According to the climatic conditions,
At the most is it possible to kick away some rules which every competitor will adapt to his customs, and especially his experience.
1. The preparation of feetfor this race is taken into account by participants' great majority. The duration of this one spreads out between 5 and 60 days. The common denominator of this preparation is the tanning.
The list of the used products cannot be exhaustive; it depends on customs, on commercial distributions, and on countries.
Creams antifriction are very effective, it prepare well the skin and allow a good tanning (Prodexine, Nok)
Substances with veterinarian custom, paints, etc are also used.
The best way of buying running shoes makes the object of studies pushed on behalf of the competitors, and improves often year by year; each goes of the guiles and modifications there, quite more learned the some than the others;
All the shoes should always have at least one size furthermore than the normal, and mostly two sizes (elongation of the foot beyond 30 km, and permanent inflation. The shoe is always worn;
Certain shoes favor the traffic of the sand (opening forward and behind), the others prevent it;
The divisions favor the absence of conflict;
The sock is rigorous, fine sometimes with separate fingers.
3. The foot 'in running'
Prevent the appearance of blisters. Two main words : HYGIENE - DRYING
HYGIENE
Dices the arrival, the indispensable cleaning of feet. Some centilitres of your water on a tissue will perfectly work. Indeed clear the sand of corners.
It is not recommended to dilute the foot, even less to plunge it for a long time into the water, not so as to weaken the skin and increase the maceration.
DRYING
Air your feet, fan-shaped toes in the sun, and in the wind. Air your socks and your shoes.
Do not walk barefoot, but with your 'old socks of the day before' which are dry.

18 people from England are running the Marathon des Sables in 2009 in order to raise money for Facing Africa. Noma (cancrum oris) is an acute and ravaging gangrenous infection affecting the face. The victims of Noma are mainly children under the age of 6, caught in a vicious circle of extreme poverty and chronic malnutrition.
Chris Lawrence was the founder and owner of Best of Morocco Ltd and in 1993, he introduced the Marathon des Sables (MdS) to the UK. He sold the company in 2005.
Great Britain now enters the largest contingent with 235 competitors. Over the years that Chris has been involved with the MdS, he has made it a rule that each British competitor must do this for a charity. The majority of Facing Africa's funding comes from the efforts of British competitors at the MdS which now constitutes about 40% of the UK competitors. Each individual and team competitor's donations are listed on the site.
Noma (cancrum oris) is an acute and ravaging gangrenous infection affecting the face. The victims of Noma are mainly children under the age of 6, caught in a vicious circle of extreme poverty and chronic malnutrition.
Noma begins with ulcers in the mouth. If the condition is detected in the early stage, progression can be prevented with the use of mild antibiotics and immediate nutritional rehabilitation.

TIMING MDS dehydratation & digestive confusions
publication le 04/03/2011
Councils on the prevention and the treatment of the dehydration and digestive confusions.
The MARATHON DES SABLES is a race where the ambient temperature can exceeded 50°c with one degree of hydrometric which is often very low. The preparation for the stamina is naturally indispensable and the acclimatization in the heat is not still possible for you.
So it is important that your clothes are adapted favouring the evaporation of your sweat and the traffic of the air on your body, cover, please, your head and your nape of the neck. The exercise in warm atmosphere entails dehydration and your performance is decreased there then to drink and to run you should not especially choose. A bad hydration limits your performances and increases the risk of exhaustion, digestive discomfort, and the grave pathologies and naturally the risk of abandonment.
During the race, know that your sensation of thirst does not allow to compensate for all the real needs of your body often the quantity of water which you take spontaneously is not sufficient, the absorption from 150 to 300 ml of water every quarter of an hour could be recommended and it is necessary to distribute your consumption by taking into account difficulties and duration of every stage.
Furthermore through the sweat you lose until 15 g of salt a day, it is thus necessary to replace them, we recommend for the first five hours of race: 1,5 g of salt by litter of water, between 5 and 10 o'clock: 2 g of salt by litter of water and after 10 hours of race: between 2 and 3 g of salt by litter of water. To favour the ingestion, it is necessary to add carbohydrates which will look in more a certain flavour to your drinks. For the tablets of salt, it is recommended to dilute them in the water to facilitate the assimilation.
You can easily estimate your state of hydration by watching your physical abilities the volume of urines and their density. If you notice at you or at one of the competitors, the presence of signs allowing us to suppose a severe dehydration such as irritability, confusion, illness, behavioural problems, indicate to the organization.
For the treatment of the dehydration we favour the oral way by adding mineral salts to your water. If it is not enough we can be brought to put a drip. To cross the finishing line you already dream about it but to make it in optimal conditions a prevention of your dehydration and an effective hydration are indispensable.
Councils for the digestive confusions
The realization of an effort prolonged in thermic atmosphere raised in a foreign country with a limited hygiene is going to favour largely the appearance of digestive confusions at the competitors. The choice of the taken food and their absorption limited and spread during the race with a true meal over the bivouac accompanied with water and with salt to favour the hydration are small advices already known by most of you. The hygiene of hands in particular which seems naturally difficult to respect can avoid the inter-human transmission of germs responsible for sometimes serious digestive confusions. Of the simple fact of your effort of the traumatism repeated on your "digestive tract" and an almost compulsory dehydration can pull a digestive discomfort to meadows of half of you.
We invite you to limit or to practise with the biggest caution the auto medication and in every case to worry us part if you are brought to consult us. Indeed doses accumulated by certain products in a context of dehydration and of effort can be extremely harmful both on the digestive plan and on the general state. It is the reason for which we moreover supplied you with a medical card follow-up allowing us to avoid these incidents.
In the presence of nausea and / or of vomits: attention it already limits the liquidiens contributions and it is quickly necessary to take antiémitiques which will allow you to continue your hydration which must be the most regular possible. Don't hesitate to ask to us for them. In case of diarrhoea, it increases naturally the liquidiennes losses of your body with there also a risk of dehydration and we have medicines which decrease the digestive secretions, which slow down the transit and the "digestive healing products". If you notice some blood or if you think of having temperature, it is imperative to speak to us about it quickly. The abdominal pains which accompany most of these digestive confusions can be treated by anti-spasmodic. You can also have « gastric burns » often activated by your effort and favoured by the grip of aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs. It is imperative to stop any medicines which can be toxic and to take "bandages".
As you can notice it, all these digestive confusions except the discomfort which they entail, can have an echo mattering on your physical performances and must be thus handled and taken care very prematurely to help you continue this magnificent adventure.

In addition, the MARATHON DES SABLES is once more calling up the services of an incinerator lorry. Aimed at destroying waste created by runners, the lorry is equipped with an auto combustion furnace, capable of burning not just organic matter but plastic and light metal. Several kilos of ashes are collected at the end of the race, corresponding to the daily waste of more than 1,300 people. Since 2007, GTR Maroc is in charge of transporting the incinerator furnace weighing 8.5 T.
Portable ashtrays are distributed during the race. Remember a cigarette butt left in the desert takes 2 years to fully degrade.
Carbon footprint Concerned about the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the MARATHON DES SABLES, AOI is calculating its carbon footprint the last year. The aim is to reduce gas emissions thanks to alternative energies such as solar power, and to set them off by, for example, planting trees.

AO’s participation in this extreme fundraising event as co-founder of PACE, will benefit many South Africans. Families and patients affected by ARRHYTHMIA, or survivors of sudden death, experience huge emotionalchallenges which need not be aggravated by impossible financial burdens.
The patient support fund will assist suitable applicants with costs related to arrhythmia procedures, device implantation, treatment and care management.
Your support and DONATIONS will be greatly appreciated and mean an immense amount to financially challenged patients.
The Malaysian Mr Mohamed Adnan Osman (MYS-D27) will be participating in the race and for the cause of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation.
At 66, retired teacher Mohamed Adnan Osman, a fan of extreme sports, is as fit as a fiddle. And as proof, he has scaled the country's 12 highest peaks and run 12 full marathons. And now he is signing up for the gruelling Marathon des Sables (Marathon of Sand), dubbed the toughest foot race on earth. The seven-day 243km race will be in the Sahara Desert in Morocco from March 29 to April 4 Not only must participants run with a backpack filled with necessities, but on one of the days, they will have to run non-stop for 80km within 30 hours. "I am excited," said Adnan, a father of two sons, after receiving a RM25,000 ($10,447) mock cheque from Sime Darby director Tan Sri Wan Zahid Noordin, who is also a Sime Darby Foundation council member. Adnan said he would be taking up the challenge for his own personal achievement and to raise funds for the Malaysian AIDS Foundation. "I've done a lot of crazy things, and my family has given up on keeping track of my activities," he said. Adnan said he was determined to make up for not being able to complete his bid to cycle 9,000km from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing last year. He was refused a visa at the Vietnam-China border. The desert marathon is open to people aged 18 to 78, and each year about 800 people from all over the world - mainly French and British - participate for a trophy, a commemorative T-shirt, a certificate and a 5,000 euro ($9658) prize money.
Asked if he would go to a desert to train and acclimatise himself before the competition, Adnan replied "no". He would train on sandy beaches locally in the hot sun. Although the temperature here is much lower than the 45ºC to 48°C in the | Sahara Desert, Adnan said that was the best he could do. Taiping-born Adnan graduated from Brinsford Lodge Teachers College, England, in 1963 and taught at various schools, including the Royal Military College in Sungai Besi. However, he is not the first Malaysian to run the desert marathon. Ngae Koh Hieng, a lawyer, and Dr Tan Tah Ming, both in their early 50s, were among the finishers last year. MARATHON DES SABLES logo
publication le 19/11/2009
For the 25th anniversary, AOI wanted to give the logo a new youthful makeover. This was achieved with the involvement of Emilie Caillaud-Houel, a graphic designer who has been a volunteer on the MDS team for 3 years.
With the passing of the years, competitors’ ‘looks’ have changed: equipment and materials have developed and nobody runs with a Tagelmust (cheiche) around their face any more.
The logo thus had to reflect the competitors’ current image. Keeping a logo based on a photo taken 20 years ago no longer corresponded to the MARATHON DES SABLES’ image.
Making the competitor stand out from their contextual frame makes for increased dynamism without, however, completely overhauling the old logo, familiar to everybody. This is a reflection of what characterises the MDS spirit: a desire to push our limits whist at the same time respecting the environment.
This new graphic is also easier to reproduce on different mediums (tee-shirts, stickers, banners, etc.).
Participants in the next editions of MDS will be able to use this logo but must request approval from AOI, outlining the production and circulation media to be used (e.g.: tee shirts to be worn at an evening event or for the MDS itself, etc.). Any use of the logo must be authorised by AOI. The organisation will make the logo available to competitors in different formats (jpg, pdf, etc).
Long live this new logo!!!

At the beginning of the week, His Majesty the King of Morocco received American Secretary of State Mrs Hillary Clinton, in Ouarzazate. The Sovereign presided over the presentation ceremony for the Moroccan solar energy project.
The King aims to cover 40% of the kingdom’s electricity needs using solar power.
This project to produce electricity from solar energy reaching a total of 2,000 megawatts represents an investment of 9 billion dollars.
The project is broken down over five sites, which should be operational by 2020, including Ouarzazate. Once completed, this project will allow for an annual saving of one million tonnes of oil, representing almost 500 million dollars and avoiding the emission of 3.7 million tonnes of CO2 per year in Morocco.
In the Greater South region, on this same date, Mr Patrick Bauer was with his "fine" team of patrollers. Setting off to survey the area for the creation of the “famous” 25th MDS course, we were able to glean a comment for future participants:
"Exclusively for the darbaroud.com website, I can reveal and confirm what numerous competitors have imagined for the 2010 edition! Yes indeed, the course, which is still made up of 6 stages, has been slightly extended to reach a total of 250 km - the 25th anniversary requires this! The itinerary will be packed with the most beautiful sites in the Saharan provinces. The menu will include dunes, mountains, dried up lakes, regs, oases and ... more dunes!"
In Ouarzazate once again, we must also acknowledge the presence of staff from the charity SOLIDARITE MARATHON DES SABLES who had come to set up a project dedicated to the children of the commune. The beginning of 2010 will herald the inauguration of a sports discovery centre. More than one hundred children aged 3 to 11 years will benefit, with physical education courses for the younger children and Athletics initiation for the others. Part of the centre will be reserved for mothers, with support courses (hygiene and health, micro-projects and literacy).
Miss Didi Touda, winner of the women’s race for the last 2 MDS, will be involved in this project, along with 6 local people. The centre is located at the entrance of Ouarzazate and is currently being developed. More information to come on the website.

Alex Williams (AUS-D701) from Australia, he is 52 years old and is walking his first MdS in the 25th Marathon des Sables. He will turn 53 on the second day of the 2010 event. He will run for JDRF, Juvenile Diabetes Reserch Foundation.
He is using the opportunity to help the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) raise awareness about Type 1 Diabetes and the devastating affect it can have on the 46 miliion people around the world who suffer with this terrible illness, himself being one of them. He was diagnosed 36 years ago at the age of 17. Since then He have had more than 36,000 injections of insulin in order to stay alive from one day to the next. By raising awareness he hope to show other type 1 diabetics that they can still live a long, healthy and fulfilling life and achieve almost anything they set their mind to.
In addition to the shear joy of walking across the desert, something which he learned about when he lived in Saudi Arabia for 5 years, he have 2 other goals he aim to achieve from his efforts across the Sahara in 2010. Those 2 goals are first, to raise awareness and educate the public about the vital difference between type 1 and the more common type 2 diabetes. They are different illnesses that have similar symptoms but entirely different causes. And the second goal is to raise funds for JDRF to help them find a cure for type 1 diabetes.
If anyone would like to help his cause and make a donation to JDRF to help the 46 million people around the world who suffer type 1 diabetes now, as well as help the next generation of children avoid this terrible illness, they can make a contribution at this web page

publication le 16/12/2009
Adam du Plooy (RSA-D383) is a 30 year old South African living and working in Dubai. He will be running in the 2010 edition of the 25th MDS and his goal is to raise awareness and funds for the Ernie Els for Autism foundationand Dubai Autism Center.
The first time, he saw a child with autism I knew that I would like to help the affected children and families. Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioural challenges. The cause and cure remain unknown. He would like to raise the profile of Autism awareness here in Dubai and the Gulf and make people aware of things like:
·Autism affects 1 in every 94 births across the globe
·Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the world
·67 Children are diagnosed with autism every day
·A new case of autism is diagnosed every 20 minutes
·More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with Aids, Diabetes and Cancer combined
·Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism
·There is no medical cure for autism.
He want to use the MDS in his quest to raise awareness for the disorder. Ernie Els immediately got on board when he found out that he wanted to run for Ben to raise autism awareness. He have set up a charity fundraising webpage for the Els for Autism and he is working with the Dubai Autism on a fundraising plan for the center.

Since its creation, MARATHON DES SABLES has had more than 10,000 participants. Many personalities have made their mark on the competition, but this individual is one of the few (along with Marco Olmo from Italy) to distinguish himself as much by his discretion as by his qualities as a runner. This discreet man is nevertheless the only competitor to have run and finished 22 MDS; i.e. more than 5500 km of desert. He will, of course, be back again in 2010 to celebrate 25 years of the competition. It’s dizzying to think of the hours devoted to training and rucksack preparation!
This young man from Jura (France) is a Lamourantin, i.e. an inhabitant of Lamoura, where he works as a catering manager. A real mountain dweller, he trains in the winter practicing cross country skiing. Excellent when it comes to the ‘non-stop’, where he is able to focus his efforts, he has long been one of the best MDS competitors, achieving 10th0 place and a team victory in 1996. He finished 2nd in Jordan in 2000 and was part of the winning Desert Cup team in Mali in 2003.
The whole ATLANTIDE team remembers ‘edition zero’ of the Desert Cup in Jordan in 1999. Setting off modestly as usual, he ended up taking the lead at the 60th km, with 108 remaining to run...
Anyone who saw Christian at the last CPs will still smile at the memory. He wasn’t convinced he was in the lead. Around 30 km from the finish, he started to have doubts. He asked where the runners behind him were, how many km were left to go, if it was true that no other runners had passed... And then, between the last CP and the finish, he got lost due to unclear course markers. After losing quite a bit of time finding his way once more, he finally crossed the finishing line. He thought he had been overtaken, cursing at getting lost. It took a moment for him to realise that he had actually won his first international race! He was on cloud nine and his face shone like a child opening his Christmas presents.
Although he has proven himself to be as modest as he is discreet, he is not the kind of man to keep his 20 years’ plus of experience to himself. He has become a master in the art of preparing his rucksack: for him, everything is weighed almost to the last gram. He gives some kindly tips when asked for advice on this, but is not to be counted upon too much for training advice... He trains alone, in silence and concentration, and he is not very keen on discussing the best or worst way to prepare: it’s up to each competitor to find what suits them.
Christian often declares that the MDS has changed his life. He thinks about it all year long and it is THE leading event on his sporting calendar. Like all addicts, he has ended up getting those close to him hooked. His son Anthony thus became a volunteer at AOI, before taking the further step of signing up as a runner. He made a sensational start in the event, finishing 81st in the 21st MDS, then 63rd in the 22nd and 28th in the 24th edition: the specialists will appreciate his performance...
For the 2010 edition, another Ginter will line up beside Christian on the starting line. His eldest son, Sébastien, coming to experience his father’s passion at least once.
For this 25th MDS, Christian will wear the symbolic number 23; granting him this modest request is the least we can do... Mr Christian GINTER, meet us at the finish line!
TIMING MDS Rucksack
publication le 24/09/2010
Following a study of three categories of runner:
• Englishmen: classified outside the top 100
• Frenchmen: classified outside the top 100
•Leaders: runners of all nationalities classified among the top 30
The average rucksack weight found is:
• for Englishmen: 11.3 kg for 19,200 calories, i.e. 5.2 kg of food
• for Frenchmen: 8.700 kg for 16,800 calories, i.e. 4.6 kg of food
• for Leaders: 7.200 kg for 16,000 calories, i.e. 4.7 kg of food
If we compare the weight of food for Frenchmen and Leaders, we find that there is not much difference, and indeed often less food weight carried by Frenchmen, for more calories. This contradiction springs from the participants’ eating habits.
The difference in food weight between Frenchmen and Englishmen is just 600 g for 2,400 additional calories. This gives a weight of 4,200 kg for 16,800 K/cal.
Englishmen thus appear to find energy products with more calories. They might gain some weight in this area as they rarely repackage their food, keeping the original packaging: a gain of around 200 g.
Frenchmen could ideally decrease the weight of their food by 400 g.
Englishmen nevertheless appear to carry too much food – some have 25,000 calories whereas 20,000 would be largely sufficient.
Equipment weight is:
•6.1 kg for Englishmen
•4.1 kg for Frenchmen
•2.5 kg for Leaders
Frenchmen carry more equipment weight than Leaders, but less than Englishmen.
We can note a difference of between 1.6 kg and 3.6 kg with regard to the equipment itself.
‘Comfort’ equipment is thus an area to work upon to decrease weight carried: change of clothes, mattress, stove, camera, MP3, book, etc.
- too many clothes: FAVOUR LIGHT FABRICS WHICH PROVIDE INSULATION.
- rucksack too big and thus heavier: A VOLUME OF 25 - 30 L IS SUFFICIENT
- duvet too heavy: IDEALLY SHOULD BE BETWEEN 500 G AND 1 KG
- cooking materiel, mattress, etc.: NO CUP, POLYCARBONATE SPOON/FORK, READYMEAL, HALF MATRESS, ETC.
- large wash bags and towels: IDEAL –PIECE OF SOAP, MINI TOWEL, MINI TOOTH BRUSH, TOOTHPASTE SAMPLE, EVEN A DISPOSABLE RAZOR
The leaders will only have one change of underwear in insulating, high-performing and lightweight material which they keep for the bivouac (pants or 2nd pair of shorts, 1 shirt and 1 pair of socks). They wash or rinse their running clothes to get rid of salt; to do this, they must, however, arrive early – also possible to dry during the night... For the evening, they have a sweatshirt or long sleeved shirt and a Tyvek suit.
Note: your cardiac rhythm increases by 20% when you run with a rucksack weighing the equivalent of 10% of your bodyweight. Support changes and the body has a tendency to lean forward. Your feet “slide” towards the end of your shoes. Rubbing increases, heightening the risk of injury to the lower back and shoulders.
It is thus self evident that the heavier your bag, the greater the risk of being hampered by various injuries, in particular blisters. It is thus important to pay particular attention to the weight of each object amongst your equipment.
Your rucksack should not, therefore, exceed a weight of 9 kg for 17,500 Kcal, i.e. 4.8 kg of food and 4.2 kg in equipment weight.
Ideally you should aim to get close to 8 kg for 17,000 Kcal, i.e. 4.4 kg of food and 3.6 kg in equipment weight.
This looks feasible based on the findings for Frenchmen, but drawing on Englishmen for the weight/Kcal ratio and Leaders for the equipment weight...
Easy!!! Start eliminating those excess grams!
Calculators at the ready!
Note: Some brands of rucksack declare that their bag is suitable or even recommended for the MDS. This is not true, as these bags can hamper the correct positioning of the runner number. It is important to check that the straps and/or the ventral pack are compatible with this specific rule (see more)

IL CORRIDORE
publication le 11/01/2010
Within the running world, his name is synonymous with respect. Wherever he has run, his performances have earned him a reputation as an extraordinary runner. Not very talkative before or after the race, he expresses himself handsomely in the battle for victory. It is useless to draw up a list of his feats, as the story started some years ago and the victories and top three finishes flowed from there onwards.
It was at the 11thMDS that we saw his rangy figure appear for the first time. At his first MDS competition, there were several runners tipped for victory. He nevertheless finished third, behind the Russian André Derksen and Frenchman Patrice Costa, but ahead of two young Moroccans named Ahansal who had battled it out in the course of previous editions. At the 12th MDS, he finished 3rd once again and Lahcen Ahansal won the first of a long series of victories... From that time onwards, his name was ever present in the winners’ list. We must also, of course, emphasise that, from Veteran 1 to Veteran 3, he has been unrivalled in his category since the 12th MDS.
If we complete the table with his 4 victories in the DESERT CUP (3 in Jordan and 1 in Mali), anyone interested in running will have guessed that we are talking about the famous Italian Marco OLMO.
He is THE specialist in long distance races. His 2 UTMB victories in 2006 and 2007 cemented his renown and convinced the experts of his undeniable talents as a cross country runner. He is a sort of running alien, both in terms of his equipment, in his own DIY style, and his clothing from another era with its sometimes unexpected colours. But his most exceptional quality is the length of time he has been competing at the top level. He is 61 years’ old...
Not very inclined to chat, this man’s discretion sets journalists off course. A real ascetic, he lives to run. He trains alone, without the help of a coach, assistant or dietician. Up at 5am, no excess at breakfast and a visit to the acupuncturist in the event of a health problem. This is the simple life of a man used to working hard. His tough job as a digger driver left him hardly any leisure time, but he made the most of what little free time he had to run. Either to train or to participate in a competition. And when he’s not running, he devotes his time to meticulously preparing his equipment, with particular care in choosing his shoes.
This Piedmontese, from Cuneo, is a man of rare modesty, ill-at-ease with all the honours. He’s not the sort to jump for joy, which is a shame since he has a beautiful smile.... His exuberance is limited to embracing the finishing line. With such a record of achievements, some people would be more voluble, since he is recognised by everyone who has run with him or seen him run as one of the greatest cross country runners in the world. To beat him, you have to be very strong, manage the race almost perfectly... and of course be much younger than him. If not, at the slightest error, you’ll be overtaken.
Those who have seen the film devoted to him will have gathered that this man benefits from the support of an attentive wife. We would like to tell Mrs Renata Olmo that we owe her a big THANK YOU for allowing us to know such a champion. And if, by chance, she reads these few lines, we’d ask her to tell Marco that he is an example to the running world and will remain forever a WINNER!

Proyecto Solidario

About Gary Guller: Gary Guller is both a world-renowned, record-setting mountaineer and a professional motivational and inspirational speaker, trusted by the world’s top organizations and corporations. In 2003, Gary was leader of the largest ever cross-disability group to reach Mt Everest Base Camp, at 17,500 feet. After setting this record, he went on to summit the peak, reaching the summit on May 23, 2003, and becoming the first person in the world with one arm to summit Mt. Everest. Later the next year, Gary lead an expedition to the summit of the world’s sixth highest mountain, Mt. Cho Oyu, located in Tibet.
Just as he discovered his passion for alpine climbing, Gary lost the use of his arm (spinal cord injury) in a mountaineering accident. He stunned a medical team at Duke University by asking to have his paralyzed arm amputated, and, after serious introspection, he began climbing again, surmounting the barriers that stood in the way of his dreams. Gary has travelled and climbed all over the world, including numerous trips to Asia.
Gary is active internationally advocating for the potential of all people, but especially those living with a disability.

Tim Hull-Bailey (GBR-D423) Geologist will run his MDS for SHCT an independent registered charity working with the NHS in Sheffield. Their aim is to enhance patient care by funding cutting-edge medical equipment, independent medical research, plus additional comforts and facilities for the benefit of their patients.
"In July 2009 I was posted to Cairo for a year, for some unknown reason I thought this was a perfect opportunity to test my level of endurance and once and for all prove that anybody can run, even me with my gammy legs. So I signed up for the Marathon Des Sables - "The toughest foot race on earth!", having never completed a single marathon, I thought 6 in 7 days across the Sahara would go some way to proving my point. Unfortunately much of these marathons will be made across sand dunes, whilst carrying all my kit and food for the full 7 days! So here I am a little over 2.5 months until the start, battling the flu, wondering just how I'm going to get fit enough for the ordeal ahead"
HUNGARY chidrens hospital for Simon (D408) & Harry (D409)
publication le 24/02/2010
Two athletes, Simon Saunders (GBR-408) and Harry Harron (IRL-D409) training together in Budapest, Hungary. As well as representing their home nations they are representing HUNGARY too and raising much need funds for a regional chidrens hospital.
Greg Dorey, the British Ambassador to Hungary, will launch a major new fund-raising appeal, with an initial target of € 50,000, at the 13th annual Budapest Burns Supper on Saturday 30 January 2010.
The plan is to raise funds to expand the number of mother and child distance trauma suites at the Second Department of Paediatrics at Budapest’s Semmelweis University Hospital, better known as SOTE II.
The rooms will allow the mothers of critically ill children coming in from the Hungarian countryside (and possibly, under certain circumstances, from outside the country’s borders) to stay with their offspring, an important aid to recovery. SOTE II has very few such facilities at present.
Tackling the fund-raising drive are Simon Saunders (GBR-408) and Harry Harron (IRL-D409), who will take part in April 2010 in what is known as the toughest foot race on earth: the Marathon des Sables (MdS). The two men are the only Hungary-based entrants from an international field of 750, and the first for five years.
The challenge covers 250km (155 miles), which equates to about five-and-a-half marathons, and is run across the Sahara Desert over six days. Competitors have to carry with them food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag, in fact everything they will need for the duration, apart from water and a tent. (Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.)
Harron and Saunders will have to prepare all their own food throughout the race, and will need a minimum of 2,000 calories per day. Mid-day temperatures can get as high as 49°C (about 120°F), much of the day is spent running or hiking across uneven, rocky ground, and up to 20% of the total distance actually involves traversing sand dunes.
Physical fitness is important, of course, but only a fool would underestimate the mental stress that the team will need to endure. “Even though we have run many 42km (26 mile) marathons and mountain marathons between us, this does not mean that we will find the MdS easy – we are doing lots of training,” Harron and Saunders say on their blog, here
Saunders is the elder of the two-man team at 38. Now a personal trainer, he is a former cross-country athlete who has represented the UK. Harron, a pharmacist and entrepreneur, is 37. He has plenty of running experience of his own, and has already traversed 500km (310 miles) of this desert using wind power in the form of a kite and an adapted buggy.
The pair is now looking for people to sponsor its endeavours, and help it reach its fund-raising target. Company contributions to the costs of the specialist kit Harron and Saunders will need, or with their training programme, would be appreciated too. The City Home Lifestyle Complex in Ó utca is doing just that, having agreed to let the men use its PURE wellness centre and spa (including a 17m pool) in preparation for the MdS.
Directing the appeal and making sure the funds raised will be able to do the most good is the Robert Burns International Foundation, which distributes money raised by the annual Budapest Burns Supper, among other sources. Chairing the fund raising appeal will be Patrick McMenamin, who runs popular Budapest Scottish bar and restaurant The Caledonia, and who is also a member of the organising committee for the Burns Supper.
Harron and Saunders can be contacted via their blog, and Simon can be reached via email (saunders.simon@ymail.com), mobile phone (+36/30 526-3177 +36/30 526-3177 ) or Skype (simonteammypt).

Keen to investigate his surroundings from the first, the newborn Michel BACH poked his nose out into the world a few weeks prematurely. A lively presence at his nursery school, he was soon getting himself noticed on the forms of the primary school in Champigny-sur-Marne. Never short of ideas, he invariably achieved distinction of the first order in fields which, unfortunately, bore little relation to the school curriculum. As a result, it was requested that this troublemaker should find a broader field to exercise his talents. Once again, he found himself passing through the exit door somewhat early …
This path led him straight into an active life. And what an active life it’s been – those who know a little about him are aware that he’s never found himself short of things to do; specifically in a field which, modesty demands, must remain unspoken. Generous in spirit, he has often been a victim of his own good nature …
Apart from his dedicated admiration for the fair sex, his fulsome imagination and his adaptability have consistently aided him in the successful pursuit of a rewarding professional career. Today, Michel is a company director, and combines a serious approach to business with a less-than-serious approach to himself.
Since developing a passion for competitive running, he has been found wherever a race is a celebratory event. Naturally, he has sometimes achieved respectable results, but this is of little import; for him, the key element lies elsewhere – anywhere, in fact, where the eccentric is king. He was one of the first to embark upon a new adventure, the MARATHON DES SABLES desert marathon (or “MDS”). This was an innovative, off-beat event, and all the competitors appeared to be just as crazy as he was. It was right up his street.
He was to return each year, bringing friends with him as a means of sharing the widest possible range of emotions. Having completed the event 22 times, Michel has become part of the legend of this trial of endurance. Unmistakably recognizable, his headgear is improbably decorated with feathers and a variety of lucky charms. “The Indian” is a familiar figure to every runner in the world. He has run virtually everywhere, enjoying a number of high achievements in fancy dress. Where disguise is concerned, he scales the heights. We are talking Art with a capital “A”. A Marquise in the Médoc, a Christmas Tree in Issy-les-Moulineaux, the Eiffel Tower in Paris – he has made headlines in the press and on TV, where his audacity is a source of sensation.
His personality is engaging in many ways, but there is one aspect which could be written about at length: his generosity. Founder of the DROIT AU COEUR association (“Straight to the Heart”), he works quietly (a rarity for him) to help the most disadvantaged. Not a MDS goes by without the distribution of educational equipment to desert schools. Whenever help is needed for the construction of a well, a solar-powered pumping station, a craft centre or a dispensary, he’ll be there. But Michel is not the only one with a commitment to sharing. As well as his band of close friends, he runs in the company (and sometimes with the support) of a brunette who ranks in the smarter set: Sylvie CADIERNO. In addition to her sporting prowess, she is one of the first to take the floor when it comes to offering valuable advice to newcomers. In the course of 11 races, soon to be 12, she has gained experience which she is happy to share with anyone, particularly women. For her, there is no question of ignoring her beauty regime just because she is in the desert. Invariably made-up and impeccably elegant, she wears a radiant smile under any circumstances, or almost any … Most of the time, anyway, as this is a beauty with spirit who knows how to show it.
In conclusion, as is so often the case with them, this will be an invitation to get involved. Either by contacting DROIT AU COEUR (E-mail: bachmichel@aol.com), or by joining them on 13th April at the Parc de Rentilly to run the "Marne and Gondoire Marathon", which they are organizing for the 6th time. This is a beautiful course, and the atmosphere will be convivial. Naturally, Sylvie and Michel will be running the 25th MDS, wearing numbers 113 and 112.

If the MARATHON DES SABLES is the Queen of Saharan competitions, SULTAN is the King of tea. Out of this marriage, the 25th and now the 26th "SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES" has been born.
Nomads traverse the desert each day, going for many kilometres across the Sahara on only dates and tea. This ancestral tea ritual practised by desert inhabitants is the symbol of a moment when time stands still and the oral tradition perpetuates around a community fire under the Southern Cross. Tea is also the drink which gives the best hydration to people living in this hostile environment, providing them with strength and reassurance. As they cross the finish line at each stage of the 26th "SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES", the competitors from all over the world will experience this ritual for themselves under the banner. SULTAN tea will be a blessing following all the hard work - an incomparable sweetness for one and all, and an additional goal to raise morale for each test.
SULTAN tea at the finish - a single cup, like a gift from heaven.

Everybody is asked to contribute: runners and organisers are encouraged to compress their mineral water bottles to reduce the volume of rubbish in the bins. This is a gesture of solidarity and ecological awareness. This simple action could reduce the number of bin bags to be collected threefold. This will make work less arduous for the teams in charge of this task and avoid the incessant circulation of vehicles around the bivouac. This ecological gesture requires no effort.
All you need to do is empty your bottle completely, unscrew the top and push on each end before throwing it into the containers situated at the CP exits or the bags fastened to each tent.
Thank you in advance on behalf of the people who will work to keep the desert clean.

George ARDAVANIS (GRE-D638)will be observing it in the Sahara, running the MDS for the kids and their families. Help the cause, spread the word.
"I’ m coming to ask for your support towards my effort to raise awareness on autism and make a contribution to the “Autistic Society of Trinidad and Tobago”.
As many of you know, on March 28th 2010, I shall depart for Morocco, where I’ll participate in the 25th Marathon des Sables. The Marathon des Sables is considered the hardest race on earth and the objective is to complete a six-day, 250km, most challenging and larger-than-life marathon across the Sahara. One of the main goals of my participation in this event is to sensitize people on autism in Trinidad and Tobago and help me to give back to this particular charity.
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. There is no known single cause for autism, but increased awareness and funding can help families today. 2007 data indicate that the prevalence of autism is on the rise (1 in every 150 American children, and almost 1 in 94 boys). The Autism Society of the US estimates that the lifetime cost of caring for a child with autism ranges from $3.5 million to $5 million, and that the United States is facing almost $90 billion annually in costs for autism. [For more information on autism, please visit www.autism-society.com].
In Trinidad and Tobago, as of October 2007, there were over three hundred families registered with the Autistic Society of Trinidad and Tobago [web site: www.autismtt.org], but my understanding is that awareness remains low and funds are needed to advance the causes of the Society. Already my sponsors: 3M (Trinidad and Tobago), WSP International (Sweden), Herne European Consultancy (UK) and Green Leader (UK) were more than happy to help this cause. I am hoping you will find it in your heart to help, too.
At this time and until I return from the Sahara desert (April 13, 2010) all individual (non corporate) contributions made will be applied directly to the grant for the Autistic Society of Trinidad and Tobago.
Remember, no amount is too small. No contribution is trivial. Even if you can not help, please send this email to your friends and relatives. Please spread the word, let’s help these children and their families.
For any contributions that you would like to make, please make a deposit to the following account number: Republic Bank, George Ardavanis Account number: 340016748101 Please note that this account number was specifically set up for the Marathon des Sables sponsoring and the charity contributions. Cash donations can also be made by persons residing in Port of Spain. Just email me back to arrange.
Thank you for your attention and your support,
Regards,
Dr. George Ardavanis"

LE JARDIN DES AROMES (Scented Garden)
This new restaurant opened its doors a few weeks ago and is proving to be a pure delight. Nothing but sophistication here where flavours rule the roost and the harmony and beauty of the setting is on an equal footing with the wonders of the menu.
Terrace dining areas overlook a small flower-filled garden and soft cosy seating entices you over to make your selection from the menu.
The menu is truly an invitation on a voyage with traditional chicken pastilla from Fes, filalia from mythical Tafilalet and tagine from royal Rabat.
All dishes such as lamb with dates and honey for example are accompanied by fresh vegetables, the flavour of which is enhanced by a skilful blend of spices chosen by chef Sara Ziadi when cooking up her culinary wonders.
We really recommend that you treat yourself in this restaurant known for its sweet oriental delights by remembering to leave enough room at the end of your meal for desserts jam-packed with the flavours and savours of Moroccan cuisine.
Restaurant owner Siham Rida spent over two years creating this magical place dedicated to culinary pleasures.
An eatery recommended by MDS team.

Charitable activity
From 27 February 2008 James Cracknell covered over 1,400 miles from the UK to Africa in 10 days, rowing, cycling and swimming. He rowed from Dover, England to Cap Gris Nez, France, then cycled to Tarifa, Spain, and finally swam across the Straits of Gibraltar from Tarifa to Punta de Cires, Morocco. He asked the comedian David Walliams to join him for the final part of his journey because of his previous experience in swimming the English Channel.[6] The money raised by the challenge goes towards the BBC's Sport Relief charity, with highlights of the action broadcast on 14 March. He is to be the special guest at The WiG GiG which aims to raise £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.[citation needed] In January 2009, James took part in the Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race with his TV Presenter friend Ben Fogle and Dr Ed Coats as members of Team QinetiQ,[7] finishing in second, 20 hours behind the winning Norwegian team.[8] The race and the reasons behind was broadcast on BBC Television during summer 2009 in the series On Thin Ice. The trio raised funds for the Children's medical research charity Sparks, chosen as the charity partner in memory of Cracknell's niece, Eva, who died at six days old after suffering oxygen deprivation at birth.
On Saturday 3 October 2009, James Cracknell and Ben Fogle started an epic 60 hour (estimated) journey from Edinburgh to London riding a rickshaw in support of SSAFA. They aimed to arrive in time for the Pride of Britain Awards ceremony on Monday 5 October 2009.
They had to endure storm force gales in Scotland and Northumberland on their first day of the 450 mile ride.
Early on the last day they made a stop at Etonbury Middle School in Arlesey, off the A1 road to London, where about 100 children welcomed them and to wave them on their way.
James completed the grueling Marathon de Sables, dubbed the ‘toughest race on earth’ in April finishing in twelfth place – the highest placing by a British competitor in the history of the race. His overall time was 25 hours, 29 minutes and 35 seconds and he completed stage 1 in ninth place in a time of just 2 hours, 28 minutes and 12 seconds.
AOI has a scale of reimbursement should you cancel your enrolment during the last few months before the race (see Art.26 of race regulations). In order to avoid any misunderstandings or unpleasant surprises, competitors are advised to take out cancellation insurance (information available in travel agencies). Anyone can have a last minute problem after all.

SMDS Open day
publication le 14/08/2010
Nothing beats a site visit to discover the activities of the Sport Eveil Académie. In order to satisfy the rightful curiosity of the inhabitants of the Isfoutalil district of Ouarzazate, an Open Day was organised by the SMDS Association on 4th July, when it was 35 degrees in the shade. Marie Bauer, president, Patrick Bauer, honorary president and Marie Jeanne Courtier, General Secretary were present alongside training personnel to offer a warm welcome to the many visitors who came to explore the centre.
Right from the start there was quite a crowd, dozens of families from near and far came to view the premises and the activities on offer. This festive event was honoured by the presence of the chief, Mohamed ALAOUI who is head of the administrative district.
Bespoke equipment in a centre unique in the region
For many months, the association has been preparing itself to offer quality equipment to the region’s most underprivileged children. Children who have never had the opportunity to practice a sport have been the first to test the equipment with delight; a stadium kit was made available on their registration and displayed during the open day. Watched tenderly by the parents, the children put all their energies into showing what they had learnt under the watchful eye of the Sports Adviser, Mohamed Ait Moudoud and Touda Didi, double champion of the marathon des sables (women's category). Excellent demonstrations revealed talents to be watched and encouraged.
A world of young talent from 3 to 11 years old Responsible for the children aged between 3 and 5, Saida welcomed the mothers into the room with orange colours to explain the sporting initiative programs.
Hassna shared the literacy room with a buffet full of cakes and almonds; her warm welcome rivalling the ambient temperature, with mint tea to quench the thirst of visitors.
Literacy: very popular classes
Mothers dropping their children off at the centre were enrolled in literacy classes offered during the children’s lessons; in two months they learnt about the alphabet and numbers. They can now write a contact telephone number on their own thanks to their knowledge of numbers. Very diligent, they started with a slate and very quickly received their own book so they could draw the letters of the Arab alphabet dozens of times and write their first syllables with the guidance of their teacher Hassna. They are interested in hygiene classes and all ask for one thing, to learn French; for them, this would give them the chance to work, especially in hotels. Around sixty women were involved in these classes to break free from their isolation by learning to write and thus change their daily lives. They deserve our admiration.
Re-opening in September
The Sport Eveil Académie sporting academy which has welcomed over one hundred children for sports initiation activities and introductions to athletics since 11th April will re-open on 16th September 2010.

The children of the Sport Eveil Académie on excursion
publication le 13/09/2010
Most of them had never got into a bus and had never left their parents, let alone their neighbourhood situated on the outskirts of Ouarzazate.
Then why not organise an outing for them? A day that would be different from any other, during which they would discover their country?
Their agreement demonstrating their trust in the individuals in charge, the children's parents came very early so as not to miss the departure and were very emotional seeing their sons and daughters get into a bus at 10am on Monday 5 July.
Marie Bauer, the President of the association, accompanied by Patrick Bauer, Honorary President and Marie Jeanne Courtier, Secretary General, shared a great experience of intense joy from the time the bus set off to the Berber chants of the participants, big and small.
For the great majority of the 50 children who participated, this bus trip was their very first, with the discovery of two magnificent sites:
-5 July: The Dadés Gorges
-14 July: The Ksar (fortified village) of Ait Ben Haddou.
CTM generously provided the association with a bus to reach these two magnificent sites in the Moroccan South. A very big thank you goes to its Chief Executive Officer and Tourism Transport Manager.
The first destination - The Dadés Gorges - was chosen for the beauty of the trip, offering fortified villages in ochre colours standing out among the verdant flora.
The little travellers continued to sing at the top of their lungs throughout this two-hour trip through the valley of a thousand kasbahs.
Everyone in the water!
In some places, the river Dadés transforms itself into streams. Nothing more was needed for a pre-lunch stop to transform into a paddling session and then, very quickly, into… bathing. Swimming is not included in Sport Eveil Académie's disciplines, but the learner swimmers threw themselves into these thirty centimetres of clear water, to the great displeasure of the accompaniers, who had to get in too! A real refreshing pleasure; the most daring tried out underwater swimming like fishes!
A party menu: chips of course!
This improvised bathe worked up a good appetite and Kasbah dans la vallée restaurant was assaulted by the famished group, who did justice to the chicken brochettes with chips and watermelon at a very competitive price. Curiously, the children were very calm and certainly impressed by the blue earthenware décor in the restaurant's dining room and by the service. Every one of them enjoyed their meal and each plate came back to the kitchen completely empty.
The return bus journey was calmer, with our swimmers getting their strength back to tell their parents about their unforgettable adventure.
Destination Ait Ben Haddou on 14 July: 30 children visited this Unesco world heritage site
The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a Unesco world heritage site since 1987, is also a location for the filming of famous films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Kundun. The children were thus able to discover one of the most beautiful sites of the Draa valley, dating from the 11th century. It receives more than 130,000 tourists a year, 30 kms from Ouarzazate. This very educational trip allowed the children to discover the history of the Ksar (fortress), which is an example of traditional Moroccan architecture.
Marie Bauer, President of the association, gave a warm thank you to Mr Moulay, the manager of PHP travel agency in Ouarzazate, who provided funding for meals for the 30 children and 4 accompaniers.
Bravo for this solidarity initiative, which goes straight to our hearts!!!!
Several of the same kinds of outings are planned for the 2011 school holidays. This will allow children from popular neighbourhoods to also benefit from a holiday and to discover the magnificent places in this region of Morocco.
Sport Eveil Académie: an enthusiastic start to the new school year!
publication le 28/10/2010
A lot of enthusiasm on 16 and 17 September at the Sport Eveil Académie premises!
Indeed, two days were needed for registration for the athletics initiation activities. In the end, around one hundred children aged between 6 and 11 years signed up, to which should be added the fifty 3 to 5 year-olds for the sports discovery course and the 60 women for the literacy classes.
Athletics initiation: a big increase in numbers
The association’s office decided to further open the access to sporting activities for two reasons: to make the facilities profitable and to meet the increasing and pressing demand since the centre opened. The set aim was to receive a minimum of six groups of 20 children, instead of the three groups of 20 formed during the breaking-in period for the activities, which took place from April to July. This goal was achieved, to the great satisfaction of the families and organising team. 5 groups are in operation and a sixth group currently being formed in accordance with school requirements.
All registration requests submitted by parents were followed up at once, with an on-site physical aptitude medical examination by Doctor Echafaiy from Ouarzazate hospital centre. Two children with serious visual deficiencies will benefit from an adapted programme, which will allow them to take advantage of the activities in the same way as the other children in good health.
These examinations are paid for by the association, taking account of the families’ resources.
Professional facilities
All the elements of the stadium kit (the first of its kind in a private sports centre in Morocco) have been deployed in the centre’s inside arena; Jean-Paul Bourdon, FFA technical officer, who specialises in the use of the kit, delivered a training session to Touda Didi, the centre’s sporting coordinator and, lest we forget, a top level athlete and winner of the women’s MDS in 2009. Theory was put into practice straight away with the children registered for the first session, who waited impatiently for the doors to open well before the scheduled date.
A course dedicated to speed was designed close to the centre, with authorisation from the local authorities. The marking of the course, using small piles of orange coloured stones, is strangely reminiscent of that carried out by the course markers for the MDS.
Women committed to the literacy programme;
All the women who signed up in April came back to register for the September programme, with the exception of two, who had left Isfoutalil. This is recognition of the work carried out by the coordinator, Hassna, who possesses all the pedagogical qualities needed to teach adult learners. Each of the three groups is limited to 20 women and a waiting list was drawn up, like in April.
Quality sports discovery for the young ones
Two coordinators welcome the young children three times a week: Saida and Touda are a highly responsive partnership, managing around twenty youngsters developing the love of sport. The programme, written by Odile Collinet, intersperses physical activity and indoor activities. It’s a joy to watch these little gems trying to act like the grownups!!!!
After the effort: a snack, of course!
This little band need to eat their fill, and become very disciplined when the cakes arrive, made by our cook, Mahjouba, in addition to fruit salads and dairy products. The daily management of this refuelling is the responsibility of Aurélie Chatellier, the team’s new arrival and a resident of Ouarzazate. The snack is served in the centre’s inner courtyard, in the shade of the olive trees – a habit which does not depend on the caprices of the weather, as the Moroccan autumn is always fine.
What immediate needs?
Sponsoring of the children is underway, designed to finance the purchase of new sports shoes, to replace the flip-flops worn by the worst-equipped children. A pair of trainers costs 200 dirhams.
200 dirhams is the equivalent of 20 Euros: a little less than the value of a supporter’s order (30 Euros).
We would be delighted if your generosity could help us to equip each child in the Sport Eveil Académie for a successful return to sport this autumn.
TIMING MDS race regulation
publication le 10/11/2010
Whether this is the 1st or 20th time you are participating in the event, it remains essential to read the rules carefully. These provide the answers to the majority of questions competitors ask. The following articles of the rules merit particular attention. They are either part of the fundamental points, have undergone modifications or are completely new.
COMPETITORS’ CATEGORIES (ART. 5)
With regard to the classification of veterans, the year of birth will be used as a reference.
- VF1 and VH1: 40 years old during the year 2011 (born between 1971 and 1962)
- VF2 and VH2: 50 years old during the year 2011 (born between 1961 and 1952)
- VF3 and VH3: 60 years old during the year 2011 (born between 1951 and 1942)
- VF4 and VH4: 70 years old during the year 2011 (born between 1941 and 1932)
CLASSIFICATION AND TRANSPONDER (ART. 15 and 27)
Each competitor receives a small electronic device which allows for their time between the CP and finish to be recorded. This device contains the competitor’s personal data (vest n°, age, sex, etc.) It is therefore unique and its loss is problematic. If you lose your transponder, it may be replaced through paying a penalty fixed by the service provider. If a competitor loses their transponder for a 2nd time, they will pay a second set fine and will be automatically excluded from the race (See ART. 28).
WATER SUPPLIES (ART.16)
The quantities of water distributed at the various control points allow for competitors’ daily needs to be managed. Certain checks will allow for a choice of 1.5 or 3 litres of water, so as not to penalise the faster runners and also allow the slower runners to hydrate themselves correctly, with it being up to them to transport more weight. Runners, who rarely take 3 litres, will not be able to make up for this water later on.
At the end of the non-stop stages, all competitors will receive 4.5 litres at the finish line and 4.5 additional litres on the 2nd day, from 12pm, at the water distribution point situated in the middle of the competitors’ camp.
BIVOUAC (ART. 16)
The competitors are housed in mobile tents designed for 8 people. These tents are attributed by registration country, according to the number of competitors registered. There are 10 distinct sectors corresponding to each representative: Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Luxembourg, Morocco, Spain, USA and France. The competitors must, without fail, stay in the sector reserved for them, without encroaching on the other tents. Failure to adhere to this rule will incur a penalty (see ART. 27 and 28).
BEHAVIOUR (ART. 27)
Insults, inappropriate gestures or any other behaviour which goes against sporting ethics will not be tolerated. Although very rare in the MDS, behavioural errors will be penalised and may lead to the competitor in question being excluded from the race (see ART. 28).
LUGGAGE
As mentioned in the Tips and Tricks* section, with regard to luggage in air transport, competitors are strongly recommended to keep their backpack with them as hand luggage. The same goes for your shoes, running apparel and duvet. These items are difficult to replace. If baggage goes astray, and they are lost, this could be irremediable and could even lead to a competitor having to withdraw from the race. It is better to keep them with you as hand luggage and put anything which might cause problems when boarding in your hold luggage: survival kit, food, medication, creams, etc.
The reconnaissance mission for the 26th MDS has come up with a course worthy of the event’s reputation. Anyone who thought it might be hard to devise an itinerary to match the beauty and difficulty of the 25th anniversary MDS will soon see that nothing is impossible after all. We can now announce that the 26th SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES will be a wonderful event in every sense of the word.
To stir the imagination of forthcoming participants, here are two or three exclusive snippets from the 2011 itinerary. With its 13 km of majestic dunes, Erg Chebbi will be one of this year’s high points. The dunes, Morocco’s highest, are undeniably difficult to cross, but in recompense they offer a feast of arabesques to the eyes. Several jebels with slopes exceeding 12% will add colour to the course and reveal some breathtaking scenery. It’s a wonderful sensation to stand high and take in a 360% view. Patrick and his trackers once again took their time to contemplate those familiar panoramas that have lost nothing of their charm.
This year, sand and dunes will be present in every stage of the marathon. There will also be numerous oueds to cross that no one ever goes over because they are off the beaten track. Some remote villages will be passed through, giving an idea of the daily lives of a people attached to their land and traditions. Also included will be a pair of dried-up lakes and a few steep-sided gorges to bring reality into the picture. And the valleys, of course – there will be some very beautiful valleys, plus plateaux with pretty black stones littered with fossils. If you want to know more, you’ll just have to come and see it for real on 1 April 2011.
Many people look at a programme like this and wonder if they will be ready, or if they are up to standard. Obviously, you need to train hard to get to the finishing line, but that doesn’t mean that you need to be a Super Marathon Runner to finish. Speed isn’t everything, and a good walker is perfectly capable of completing the MDS, and often arrives a lot fresher than a runner who has had trouble pacing him or herself. It’s important to realise that this unique opportunity to cross the desert in complete security is not reserved to a select few. Discovering the majestic landscapes of the Moroccan southern Sahara is a rare pleasure within the reach of experienced hiking enthusiasts. When it comes to the competition, clearly only the great champions will get to taste victory, but most competitors simply target the finish line, which above all calls for a good dose of determination and knowing how to pace yourself.
On that subject, and to conclude, Patrick BAUER would like to inform runners that pacing themselves is crucial, because the distance won’t be any shorter than it was last year. He would also like to remind participants that water management is a fundamental concept of the MDS – failing to take the recommended amount of water to the CP can turn out to be a severe handicap, and in any case much more penalising than carrying a standby litre.

WEEK END MARATHON DES SABLES
publication le 15/12/2010
The MARATHON DES SABLES is a race apart, unique in its kind. Because of the nature of the marathon’s rules and its location (i.e. food self-sufficiency, desert, security), runners’ supporters cannot access the event. We know how important it is for runners, their families, friends and sponsors to share the moment and live through the experience together.
For that reason, a long weekend has been organized to give you a chance to be at the finishing line of the last two stages. The voyage takes place in parallel with the MARATHON DES SABLES (with different flights and hotels from the MDS runners). The trip is being organized by Terres d’Aventure, which has partnered MARATHON DES SABLES since 1995.
He even excelled at a sport we’d never seem him do: high jump!
A great champion meets some champions in the making
publication le 17/12/2010
It was 3 PM on Wednesday 8 December. Touda had just called the register for group 1 and was starting on the children’s warm-up exercises. At the Sport Eveil Académie, the doorbell rang to announce a visitor – not just any visitor, but an exceptional sportsman in the form of Lahcen AHANSAL grand champion of the MARATHON DES SABLES and never yet equalled.
He had made it his great ambition, and he managed to turn his dream into reality: Lahcen AHANSAL won his tenth MARATHON DES SABLES title, the ninth in a row, at the end of the sixth and final stage of the 22nd event.
Passing through Ouarzazate in preparation for the Zagora marathon due on 31 December, he stopped by to say hello to the president of the children’s association, Marie BAUER After his “salaam”, he willingly joined the children in their warm-up session and then completed all the sports tests with them. He even excelled at a sport we’d never seem him do: high jump!
The children were delighted when the great marathon winner ran with them without overtaking, and the friendship and emotion were palpable.
Thank you Lahcen for such a warm and friendly visit and we wish you much success at the Zagora Marathon on 31 December.
Psst, the word is that Touda Didi may well be on the start line on 31/12.
Lahcen AHANSAL is the unrefuted king of the desert. The native Moroccan has won ten MARATHON DES SABLES gold medals in the deserts of his homeland.
Lahcen AHANSAL is a long-distance runner from Morocco, born in Amzrou (Zagora) in 1971. He is viewed as the MARATHON DES SABLES specialist after winning it ten times. He had a regular education and didn’t start athletics until the relatively late age of 19. The following year, he trained for two months at the Moroccan National Athletics School (in Rabat). He attempted the Moroccan cross-country championship but gave up before reaching the end, and took part in the first stage of the sixth MDS, coming second. The race was a revelation and Lahcen quickly made it his own. After a promising start (3rd place in 1992), disillusion (lack of sponsorship in 1993), high-ranking positions (5th place in 1994 and 1996) and giving up in 1995, it wasn’t until his fifth official attempt that he managed to reach the ultimate victory in 1997. Although the following year saw him reach second place, Lahcen set off on a chain of nine wins in a row from 1999 to 2007, transforming him into the uncontested master of the race. In 2008, it was his brother Mohammed who won the legendary contest.
As well as his sporting activities, Lahcen also organizes treks in the south of Morocco and the Zagora Marathon.
We chose the name Lupi (Wolves) because we like exploring the land together, just like wolves do in pack. We are wild and we love living close to nature. Going through many experiences made of efforts and survival, we gained an active and unflagging attitude towards any challenge, though still loving a peaceful way of living.
We love the impassable mountain paths, the green grasslands, the scorching sand of the deserts and the cold snow of the glaciers. Nothing ever stops us !
We like observing together the stars from the most beautiful places in the world, no matter how cold or hot the weather can be…
With humbleness, we share joys and pains of the pack. We help each other but never intrude other people's spaces.
In a few months we are going through another adventure and our common enthusiasm will help us to overcome the difficulties we will have to face.
We are carnivorous, but this time we have to be content with the lyophilized food ! ... I guess we will keep our teeth ready for another adventure!

Nick run his MDS for a cancer charity
publication le 11/01/2011
Nick Tiller (D854 - GB)is about to run six marathons in six days in 50-degree heat. Even he thinks he is crazy
Fitness fanatic Nick Tiller is preparing to run 156 miles over six days -- that's pretty much a marathon a day. Oh, and he will be doing it in 50-degree heat across the Sahara Desert in southern Morocco. Why? To raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign.
The 28-year-old physiologist tells People: "I started doing marathons and kept wanting to push myself, and I have always wanted to do something for a cancer charity."
Mr Tiller, who is one of 200 people from the UK competing in the race, will have to be completely self-sufficient for its duration, carrying all food, clothes, a sleeping bag, medical kit and an anti-venom pump to protect against snake bites and scorpions, in a 10kg rucksack on his back.
"Everyone thinks I am nuts, without exception. But I think you have to be a bit crazy to do something like this." He recently completed three marathons in three days. The feat, known as the Marathon Des Sables, takes place from March 31 to April 11 next year. What is he most worried about? "Midday temperatures can reach 50 degrees centigrade and I am worried about my appetite being suppressed in the heat. Knowing what to take in the backpack is also a worry. There have also been cases of people getting lost in the desert." Mr Tiller is running around 100 miles a week in preparation.
"This is without a doubt the toughest event I have entered, and the decision to do so was not made lightly. I also believe that anyone has the potential to do something like this." Umm. www.nicksdesertrun.com
The first symposium on “local and emergency citizen-based medical care”, organized at the initiative of Patrick Bauer, honorary president of the association Solidarité Marathon des Sables, took place on 4 and 5 December in Ouarzazate. The event had a clear objective: to make health and tourism professionals aware of the problems involved in providing local medical care in the southern provinces of Morocco, and to give training in new emergency care tools.
This first gathering greatly exceeded organizers’ expectations. Over 80 Moroccan and French health and tourism professionals attended the event to discuss emergency medical care in remote regions far from the capital. It was described by the press and participants as “the first of its kind”. The presentations and ensuing debates were intense, pointing to shortages and malfunctioning, and calling for new strategies to deal with the situation.
Sharing practical skills Participants were particularly keen to take part in discussion workshops on subjects like regulations for emergency medical care, and training on how to use a defibrillator and basic first aid. The focus was on what improvements can be made.
Reanimation specialists, like Professor Alexandre Mignon from Cochin Hospital and Professor Mohamed Miguil from Casablanca CHU, attended the event to demonstrate how a defibrillator can be used by a regular citizen in an emergency to save the life of someone under cardiac distress. Anyone can now save a life using a defibrillator, which is easy to use. France currently possesses 70,000 defibrillators and the equipment could be used in the tourist provinces of Ouarzazate Er rachidia, Tinerhir, Zagora and Tata.
A demonstration was made of a medical evacuation by helicopter with the help of the Marrakesh-based company Héliconia. This provided an occasion to discover two mobile health units from the national initiative for human development attributed to the Ourazazate province by His Majesty the King.
Mr Adeslem Bekrate, governor of Ouarzazate province, and Mr Mohamed Mjid, President of the M’Jid Foundation, thanked Mr Patrick Bauer warmly for initiating the event, which could lead to new partnerships aiming to equip the provinces of Ouarzazate, Er rachidia, Tinerhir, Zagora and Tata with suitable means to save people in distress in remote areas.
Equipment and partnerships to help inhabitants Isabelle Weill, president of the French association RMC/BFM, announced the donation of ten defibrillators to Ouarzazate province: a first initiative in line with the symposium’s objectives. A big thank you to her for this exemplary gesture, which opens the way for showing solidarity to people severely lacking in resources. A partnership is also under study with insurance companies aiming to include helicopter evacuation in specific insurance contracts signed up by tourists drawn to the wide open spaces of south Morocco. Large scale patronage would mean that a percentage of the revenue could be put into a fund for equipping provinces in the south and organizing regular emergency health care missions for hard-to-access regions. An example of socially responsible tourism that respects the isolated inhabitants living in these regions.
TIMING MDS flight departure
publication le 21/01/2011
This only concerns competitors registered at agencies in France, Japan, Korea and Luxembourg. Several aircraft (4) have been chartered for the 26th SULTAN MDS operation. To date, AOI does not have the time schedule for these special flights.
All competitors signed up will be informed in March individually by post of the time of their air transfer. You should, however, be prepared for a very early departure on 1 April from ORLY SUD airport. For the return on 11 April, flights will land at ORLY SUD airport – times are not yet available.
Transavia France, Partner of MARATHON DES SABLES Hélène ABRAHAM Vice-president product sales and marketing, Transavia France
Three years ago, when the organizer of MARATHON DES SABLES, Patrick BAUER, contacted my team to arrange planes to transport people to the event, we imagined a standard commercial partnership operation calling for specific knowledge of Morocco, a country that means a lot to us and that Transavia France has been flying to since its early days. At the time, we had no idea that there was so much more to it than that.
Right from the creation of Transavia France in 2006 (the first flights were scheduled in May 2007), it was clear to us that we should include environmental concerns in our business agenda. Air transport makes up around 3% of CO2 emissions in the world and the growth of the industry means a growth in emissions. Although aeroplanes generate 95% of these emissions, it nevertheless seemed important to make sure we behaved as a “responsible” company. So we launched ourselves into a carbon assessment in our second year, which we have repeated since and are in the process of doing again, this time using tools that will enable us to measure our carbon consumption ourselves annually and check that action plans are working well.
In every domain, our concern for the environment and the attention we pay to it are obvious, and our company values naturally reflect this preoccupation. Many examples exist to show this.
Our job is to invite French people to travel more frequently to the countries we cover. Low cost flights provide an easy, efficient way to generalize traffic by simplifying a product. The fact that transport pollutes is undeniable.
Yet our line of business also involves stimulating tourism in certain parts of the world and helping local economies thrive. Responsible tourism fits in with sustainability and we are building for the future. And we make a point of sharing these values with our customers.
It was these very values that sparked off the initial meeting between the teams of Transavia France and MARATHON DES SABLES, and particularly the event’s creator, Patrick BAUER. More than just a race in the south Moroccan desert, the competition is above all a human adventure. Many of its competitors, wherever they come from, run for a humanitarian association. MARATHON DES SABLES takes care to leave the locations it passes through in the same state as they were before the fleeting biviouacs struck camp.
Everything developed around this theme, whether it’s recycling materials using special lorries that follow the bivouac, or penalties imposed on runners who throw their bottles in to the desert, proves MDS teams’ commitment to the cause.
This is the attitude that brought us together and that gives the marathon a particular place in our company.
Of course, our work involves sending special planes to Ouarzazate for the operation, carrying certain runners and especially the supervision staff and material. But today we have associated the Transavia France brand with the marketing side of the event, which is something we have not done for any other event to date (and certainly would not do for the many car rallies that approach us, which are a long way from our values).
We are also a benefactor of the association Solidarité MARATHON DES SABLES, which created a children’s sports school a few kilometres from Ouarzazate (opened in spring 2010), and also offers literacy lessons that have proved popular with many women. At our modest level, we are proud to partner these operations.
Having had the chance to be present at the finish line of the second-to-last stage and at the start and finish of the last stage of the race, I can testify to the courage of these men and women, whose commitment to charitable causes drives them further still, despite all the difficulties of a seven-day, completely autonomous running race.
The location of this race (the south of Morocco) is another reason for encouraging it, as well as the hundreds of runners who take part, some of them regularly.
The marathon celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010. We have already worked on putting the logistics in place for the 2011 marathon, which is a particularly important operation for us. We are delighted to see that the marathon is increasingly popular, and not just with the runners.

In the desert, more than anywhere, access to water is an absolute priority. Helping men and women gain easier, long-term access to water is of crucial importance. To help things move in this direction, MDS has established its carbon footprint and decided to compensate its emissions with a financial contribution to projects on the environment and renewable energy.
We need to be aware of the close link between human beings and their environment. Who can go without clean air? Who doesn’t need clean water to drink? No one. We therefore all have a role to play in protecting nature.
We now know that our modern lifestyle generates greenhouse gases that we must drastically reduce. This can and should be done on an individual level, but also by every business. To move in this direction, AOI and CIMBALY decided to establish their carbon footprint and then compensate their emissions with a financial contribution to projects on the environment and renewable energy. Among the various activities planned by the SOLIDARITE MARATHON DES SABLES association, several came under these criteria, so the choice was narrowed down to a project in the desert. The ultimate decision was to renovate a water distribution network using money donated by AOI and CIMBALY.
The work will be done in the villages of Tarricht and Amougger and will link up the 150 inhabitants of these small villages, plus a nearby school, to the nearest well. The intervention will entail a complete overhaul of the pumping system and water mains. The first step will be to excavate over 3 kilometres, dug by people from the villages. Then a submerged pump will be installed, along with a new electrical connection, 700 metres of cables and 3,200 metres of pipes, ready for use at the start of April 2011. Lastly, water meters (at a tariff set by inhabitants) will be used to finance the maintenance of the new water system. In the desert, more than anywhere, access to water is an absolute priority. Helping men and women gain easier, long-term access to water is of crucial importance. SOLIDARITE MARATHON DES SABLES is well placed to help other companies that would like to compensate their carbon footprint and don’t know how to go about it. Several projects only require funding to be accomplished.
As each competitor arrives at the first bivouac on 1 April, he or she will be led by the bivouac marshals to the corresponding zone of numbered tents grouped by country.
Due to the high number of competitors, it is vital that everyone sticks to their allotted zone so that all can be accommodated. Competitors will keep the same place throughout the race, and their tent numbers will be their reference for receiving emails: a keenly awaited moment of the day for keeping in contact with supporters during this wonderful adventure. 122 Berber tents pitched in two concentric circles are scheduled to receive over 950 competitors on the bivouac of the 26th Sultan MARATHON DES SABLES. Every day, the bivouac will be taken down at around 6 a.m. and then set up again at the finish line of the day’s stage: a “village” grows each morning for marathon runners to get a well-deserved rest in groups of eight per tent. Warning: competitors who do not respect the allotted country zones will incur a time penalty (see ART. 28).
For information, no advance reservations are possible.
NEW IN 2011
MOBILE PHONES The use of mobile phones in the bivouac and along the route of the 26th SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES will not be allowed and will be subject to a penalty! Following numerous breaches last year by several participants unable to respect other runners’ need to break with everyday life when they take part in MDS, and in order to maintain the peace and quiet sought by the majority, AOI have decided to put this new measure in place to preserve the authenticity, values and original concept of this sporting and human adventure. Anyone wanting to use their mobile phone will be able to do so only if they move away from the bivouac or the CP so as not to disturb other participants. We remind you that over 40,000 emails are received during the race and distributed to participants in their Berber tent each day. This form of communication with the outside world is more in line with the MDS spirit and maintains privacy and respect for everyone.
BATTERIES The runners’ bivouac is not equipped with electricity. It is therefore not possible to recharge phone batteries, cameras and other energy-consuming items. The concept of self-sufficiency also applies to this domain.
TOILETS To improve the everyday comfort of competitors and preserve the environment, new sit-down WCs will be installed all round the bivouac. Special biodegradable, compostable bags will be provided in these toilets. The bags guarantee complete personal hygiene. Bins will be placed outside for use when leaving the WC. They will be regularly emptied to avoid unpleasant odours.
FOR WOMEN To give women, and women only, the possibility of a little more privacy in their daily ablutions, cabins will be installed around the bivouac. Because of the numerous cultures and nationalities involved in the Marathon des Sables, it is important and legitimate to create spaces, however modest, away from potential prying eyes. These private cabins will be for women only and their use by men shall be prohibited. Any violations will be penalised as behavioural misconduct (see Arts 27 & 28).

Hello & Welcome to 'Desert Ultra Run'
My name is Tim Calver (D583-AUS) and this website has been designed to allow people to follow my preparation and progress towards my long held goal – participation in the Marathon Des Sables – a 7 day, 6 stage foot race across the Moroccan Sahara Desert, in April this year.
The event is also known as: "The Worlds Toughest Foot Race"
It can be as much a challenge to even gain entry to this event, as it is to undertake the training and acquisition of the equipment required to complete this unique challenge. If you are an organisation who could benefit from further media exposure or would just like to put your name or company name to supporting this endeavour, we would love to hear from you. For more information on sponsorship and support, click here
We are also using this event as a vehicle to assist in raising funds for Canteen [the Australian Organisation for Young People Living with Cancer]. CanTeen is a national support organisation for 12 - 24 year olds who are living with cancer, and is the only organisation of its kind in Australia. Read more here

Flying Dutchman on a Mission
On April 1st 2011, a determined Dutchman will begin his attempt to cross the Sahara Desert on foot as a competitor in the Marathon des Sables - and it's no April fool!
The MDS is an annual event staged in Southern Morocco, covering 156 miles (254km) in just six days. This equates to six normal marathons and is classified as an "ultra marathon". The terrain is tough, ranging from sand dunes to rock, with temperatures as high as 50°C during the day and down to minus 5°C at night.
The MDS is widely considered to be the toughest foot race on earth. Competitors are required to carry all their equipment with them, with only water and tents supplied by the event organisers.
One of this year's 1,100 competitors is Edwin van Dijk (D857-NDL) , a 47 year old Dutchman, who has lived in the UK for over 15 years, and until June 2009 had never run competitively. In fact, he had never run anywhere really. Walking up hills and sailing had always been high on the agenda, but if it came to covering long distance, a taxi was the preferred choice of transport.
One afternoon in Edinburgh, three men sat in a bar discussing their next challenge, having completed the 3-Peaks Challenge in under 24 hours (again). The desert was proposed (why not?) and that was that. After all, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Two had run marathons before - the third had not. But how hard could it be?
So in June 2009, Edwin took up running and has clocked up a couple of hundred miles in and around his local area and various exotic locations in the world. The start of his Ultra career will be as a participant in the 2011 Marathon des Sables.
The tents provided during the MDS are traditional bedouin tents (also spelled "beduin") and provided the inspiration for our Dutchman's brand - Eduin the Beduin (EtB).
The Beduin, supported by his wife Gail (G-Force) will attempt to raise lots of badly needed funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) - a charity close to their hearts. Your support is welcomed for this important mission.
Book : ultra endurance running in the heat of the sahara
publication le 22/03/2011
Product Description
The Marathon des Sables is widely regarded as the toughtest footrace on Earth. It is a seven-day, multi-stage race in the Moroccan Sahara, during which competitors must carry all their food, clothing and equipment across the ~150-mile course.
From the Publisher
The Marathon des Sables was Mark Hines' first excursion into the world of ultra-endurance adventure races. With a background far removed from endurance fitness, this book catalogues his training, preparation and participation in his first great race. Whilst the subsequent titles on the Jungle Marathon and Yukon Arctic Ultra clearly demonstrate his own evolution into an accomplished runner, the Marathon des Sables was where it all began. His training was unrefined and the equipment he chose far from the best, but this new reflective edition permits Mark to put into context all the decisions he made, and within the appendix can be found his true 'desired kit list' for such an event. Calling on his background as an exercise physiologist, Mark easily explains the adaptations involved in training for an ultra-endurance event. This culminates in an in-depth analysis of the 'athlete's heart', which is introduced within the main text but features in its entirety in the appendix. This chapter alone should be considered a must-read for anyone preparing to begin training to become an endurance runner. The Marathon des Sables is an incredible race, described in this book through the eyes of a novice racer, but one with an academic background that balances well with his natural approach to training.
The 26th SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES press conference took place on 10 March at the National Moroccan Tourist Office in Paris, marking the media launch of the 2011 event.
Back in 1986, 23 pioneers took off from the start line to tackle ergs, dried-up (or not-so-dried-up) oueds, scorching heat and sand dunes. Instead of being met with a cry of “never again”, each event has seen numbers of participants rise. In a fortnight’s time, almost 900 “desert loonies” will set off into the Moroccan swelter. Everyone’s looking forward to it – organizers, sponsors, the media and all kinds of athletes. So, on 10 March, Patrick Bauer invited a large crowd to the presentation of the 26th SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES, and the event was a great success Around thirty journalists attended, including the AFP, teams from TV5 Monde and Eurosport 2, and the Moroccan TV station 2M, who came specially from Casablanca. There were also event partners like Allianz, Transavia.com, Jogging International and of course Sultan teas, without which the race wouldn’t be happening. This year once again, Patrick Bauer and his team have rustled up a course worthy of the race’s international reputation, to be revealed to competitors when they are handed the road book upon arrival in Ouarzazate. The only tantalizing scrap of information so far is that the 26th SULTAN MARATHON DES SABLES will be the longest yet, taking runners 700 m further than last year, for a grand total of 250 km 700m. Although most competitors simply aim to reach the finishing line, there is little doubt that Mohamad Ahansal will once more try to get his surname written on the first step of the podium. As for the women, Touda Didi will be looking to win back the title. But the current holder Monica Aguilera, and Frenchwoman Laurence Klein clearly don’t see things the same way. Set your diaries for 3 April at the start line to see the adventure take off.

High technology to serve the Sultan Marathon des Sables.
This year, the Sultan MARATHON DES SABLES is benefitting from two innovative high tech systems, one to establish runners’ classifications and the other for real-time monitoring.
A quasi-immediate classification.
The system, called “Posi”, managed by the company TD com, transmissions supplier for the Sultan Marathon des Sables, is simple. All runners are equipped with a very small transponder on their ankle, which records when they pass the control points and finish line thanks to a mat allowing for operational collection. The data is transmitted by satellites to the race PC, which allows for almost immediate competitor monitoring management at the CP and real-time establishment of their classification at the finish. This classification, as in all sports competitions, is backed up with manual timing.
Around one hundred runners have decided to use this system, which will allow their friends and family, or sponsors, to follow their progress live. They are equipped with a small orange GPS box on the top of their bag, which transmits their positions by satellite, using an adapted signal to update their exact position on a Google Earth-type map. Updates are made every 10 minutes. In addition to the runners who have chosen this paid-for service, the top ten in the general classification will be systematically equipped with this system to allow as many people as possible to follow developments at the head of the race. For the first stage, the race management have nominated the 10 runners to be permanently ‘tracked’, based on their knowledge of the competitors and their sporting performances.
Direct monitoring of runners’ arrival.
A video camera will transmit a streamed image of the finishing line of each stage to the darbaroud.com website, by satellite, every five seconds, thus allowing everybody to follow the end of the stages live.

THE MARATHON DES SABLES - THE TOUGHEST FOOTRACE ON EARTH!
In APRIL 2011, Dr Justin Roberts from the University of Hertfordshire will be pushing himself to the limit by undertaking the infamous MARATHON DES SABLES - the toughest footrace on Earth - 150miles across Sahara in extreme heat with daily temperatures above 50'C.
He will have to endure searing heat, blisters, scorpians, muscle fatigue, more blisters, dehydration, snakes, sanddunes, and more blisters - all this whilst carrying everything he needs for the week and endeavouring to complete the challenging distance. This is not for the faint-hearted - this is extreme in every sense of the word.
Why is he doing this?
Justin is raising money for the MUSCLE HELP FOUNDATION - and 100% of the money raised via YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS will go directly towards delivering MUSCLE DREAMS - life changing experiences for children with MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY.
Justin is pushing his muscles to the limit, to help those who cannot walk at all. Why not be a part of something amazing today. In fact if you would also like to join Justin on his final event for 2011 - please write to him at drjustinroberts@hotmail.com.
400 people: technical, logistical and medical staff + 100 vehicles, 2 helicopters, 1 CESNA plane, 4 dromedaries, etc. and the active support of the Royal Army: 18 trucks and 40 logistical staff.
Medical Assistance A team of 45 people working under Dr Peltre, a foot surgeon with a passion for extreme sport. DOC TROTTER oversees the runners’ medical needs (foot care, reanimation, etc.) and the moral needs of those who crack in the face of hard conditions and a hostile climate. For the 24th MARATHON DES SABLES, 3 tonnes of equipment were transported and the medical team used: 5 km of elastoplast, 2700 blister patches, 125 litres of disinfectant, 230 litres of perfusion solution, 15,000 compresses, 2,800 pairs of gloves, etc.
Race management This team comprises 113 people including control centres for Ouarzazate, the administration and the race, race marshals, controllers and timekeepers. In 2011, time keeping will be ensured entirely by “transponder” for all competitors.
We start setting up the bivouac 2 days before the race. The tents (for coordinators and runners) must be fully pitched the day before the runners arrive. All equipment is unloaded and sorted during the 2 days before the race. This involves up to 6 lorries full of trunks packed by category (medical equipment, electricity, equipment for checkpoints, mechanics, bivouac marshals, trail finders, computers, etc.).
The 3 supply (catering) vans are put in place the day before.
The technical control tents are also set up the day before the runners arrive.
As to the environment, toilet set-up starts the day before to give enough time to assemble all the structures and fix the tarpaulins; we then dig around forty holes and set them up, involving a full day’s work. The rubbish bins are installed on the day itself.
Around one hundred people help assemble the 1st bivouac. The competitors’ bivouac (140 tents) is then taken down each day and loaded into the lorries in 1 hr 45 mins from 6 a.m. to 7.45 a.m.
The coordinators’ bivouac (90 tents) comes down a little faster, from 6.30 a.m. to 8 a.m. The logistics trucks (equipment and water) start loading around 6.30 a.m. and leave the bivouac around 8.30 a.m.
We then have to get to the other bivouac in a journey that can take from a minimum of 1 hr 30 mins to 4 or 5 hours for the long stage. Setting up the competitors’ bivouac takes under 2 hours (80 tents, 60 of which are set up the day before). The same thing goes for the coordinators’ bivouac.
The logistics convoy (water and equipment) is made up of 20 6x6 lorries including 2 water tanks and 2 fuel tanks. Around sixty 4x4 vehicles transport the volunteers and the equipment they need. The race director and the head track manager agree on a course studied on the map. Several parameters are taken into account: the variety and beauty of the terrain, a balanced distance for each stage, difficulties on each stage, potential access for vehicles, installation of CPs, etc. The size of the bivouac is crucial and suitable sites need to be found (right distance and good terrain). Knowledge of the terrain is a major asset in drawing up the course. When everything looks like it’s coming together, a team goes on site to turn the dream into reality. During this reconnaissance, there is much discussion and drawing up of maps. Memories are stirred up and they try out sections that look too hard to some, running on tracks impossible to cover by car. After much talking around the campfire, the team always manages to come up with a course that satisfies everyone. It’s a magical moment that’s difficult to describe, for until this sensation is felt, the satisfaction won’t be there. Every race has always been devised in harmony with the men who are there and the nature they are faced with.
The whole of MDS is a challenge. Not a day goes by without a challenge for each control centre. Every coordination member plays a crucial role. Even the most organized plans can be overthrown at any moment. Without logistics there is no race. Without track managers there is no race. Without doctors there is no race. Without controllers there is no race. Without Land Rover drivers there is no race, etc. But the most important thing is that each and every one is ready to do what it takes to make the adventure happen. Patrick Bauer has built up a team of unfailing friends ready to do what they can to make the race work, and that is no doubt the key to the organization’s success.
But as the saying goes: "You get the friends you deserve."
